Badlands Could Reform with Adam Lambert on Vocals

Bloody. Hell.

Last night on American Idol, resident rocker and my favorite contestant Adam Lambert performed (what I consider to be) the most unique version of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" in the history of recorded music.

In short, he owned everyone. Sure, there are plenty of teenyboppers on the Internet freaking out because they didn't understand the performance or appreciate the complexity of the arrangement. The judges didn't love it, either. No matter. I'm here to tell you right now, Lambert no longer needs American Idol. In fact, it might be better if he gets voted off tonight so he can front a Metal band and save rock music.

Did I not mention it was "country night?" I reiterate: Bloody. Hell. Lambert took his country assignment and basically flipped a middle finger to the producers of AI.

In short, Lambert's voice is freaking perfect for Badlands. That is, if he wants to work with established musicians. His range is so out of this world, Adam Lambert can mop the floor with just about any Glam singer on the scene today. If you don't agree with my Badlands choice, who do you think Adam could resurrect - or save?

I swear, the prospect of his voice over top some pounding drums and a raging guitar solo gives me goosebumps.

Just to compare...here's Badlands, "High Wire."

...and in the event you've never heard Johnny Cash sing "Ring of Fire," here it is:

If this guy is the future of Metal Music I am outta here. Maybe if he learned some control and not scream every word he might be better. I would rather be deaf than be forced to listen to Adam sing.
But no need to worry if you are a fan he won't be going anywhere. Even if he gets voted off The Judges will use the new rule and save his behind.

This guy is the next Freddie Mercury. Mark my words.

i agree with retrospect records he is the next freddie mercury.

he does seem a little like the late Freddie Mercury, but it has nothing to do with his voice, wink wink.LOL

The next Freddie Mercury?!?! Give me a break, Sam. Seriously, I have to disagree with you here. Adam has a "good" voice but he's not even in Freddie's league. Can he write? Freddie's writing combined with his one of a kind voice showed so many sides to Queen and made them a huge crossover band that could and did easily play to any audience. His theatricality was unmatched for his time and paved the way for so many artists - this Adam guy included. To me, Adam looks pretty one dimensional at this point - granted I've only seen the one number but it certainly isn't enough to make me consider buying an album by the guy.
Sorry, I think you're way off base. There will only ever be one Freddie Mercury; he's gone but thank God we have his legacy.

Joel , you obviously haven't researched him as much as I have. Go see some of his amazing performances on youtube. The original song alone is killer! His pitch is perfect , his range is something I haven't heard in many many years and he's the ultimate package. In a decade of fly-by-nights , flavors of the week , one-octave wonders , and Kermit the Frog soundalikes , Adam will be the guy to FINALLY put REAL singing back in the mainstream. If he can't do it - nobody will.
The 2000's version of Freddie Mercury? Absolutely , without any hesitation.

This is insane. If Adam Lambert had to stand with Freddie Mercury on stage in front of 15,000, then Lambert would shake like a scared dog ... Utterly ridiculous comparison -- Mercury is among Rock's greatest singers of all-time, and Lambert does not even have the legacy of unsigned wunderkinds like Big Bang Babies or Queeny Blast Pop!

Like I said , go check out his amazing performances on youtube - he is what the Music industry needs right now....A swift kick in the ass. No I don't think he'll buckle at all judging by his history. Pitch perfect and the range of Mercury with a killer sense of fashion. A Superstar.

OH MY GOSH! i may start watching AI!! jk, i haven't been able to watch a full ep. since the first season.

being a humongous fan of everything from glam, to zeppelin, to the blues, that performance was just lovely, it really showed some creative choice-making on his part. i didn't know they let people with half a brain on AI.

gosh, even the judges referenced led zep twice! wtf?! seriously!

lambert's got some talent. won't go far, won't win, but maybe'll form a band and not just be known as the AI guy.

besides the point, i would do him even tho he wouldn't find me his type :P

Ok. So I checked out more Adam Lambert material on YouTube and... my opinion not only stands but now, having seen more stuff by him, I have to amend it to say that although he is talented he doesn't impress me very much at all.. It's so apparent that he is pretty one dimensional... His performances seem contrived, derivative, overly theatrical, (perfect if you're looking to do Cabaret but lame if you want to 'set the music industry on it's ear' or whatever), and verging on campy.
Before anyone says it, yes, Freddie Mercury could be very much the queen of camp but again, comparing this Adam dude to Freddie is just not even close.

And yeah, don't think for a minute that I miss the irony of all of the above being elements that added to what made metal famous.
I'm sorry, I may not have my ear to the pulse of what the record buying public is clamoring for or I might not know what's "hot" right this minute but I do know a little bit about music and theatre... And I've also seen my fair share of cabaret. This guy is nothing more than a pretty talented cabaret singer that's trying to further his career by being on American Idol... Hey, more power to him! Again, I sincerely hope he doesn't win so maybe he'll have a chance at a career.
Otherwise you'll be seeing him doing cruise ship revues within the next few years.

Pitch? Yep, great pitch. Now he just needs to learn how to write and perform songs without doing the same.thing.over.and.over.and.over...

This is NOT the new messiah nor does he have his hand over a little red button that controls the global economy... And fashion sense? Please. He looks like he's shopping out of everybody's closet, throwing everything into one big pile, and glopping on the eye liner and hair dye and calling it "his own". Wake up people, everything he's doing has been done before. Better.

Youtube Statistics for Adam's "Ring of Fire"

#3 - Most Discussed (This Week) - United Kingdom
#4 - Top Favorited (This Week) - United Kingdom
#10 - Top Rated (This Week) - United Kingdom

It's not surprising that the Brits are fond of him. They don't have to deal with kind of extreme-right Christian homophobia the US has, plus the fact that the UK has a long love affair with glam rockers. Adam will be huge there.

I completely melted in my Lazy Boy after his ROF performance. Read the warranty on my DVR--expecting to wear it out with rewinds. This guy has got IT!

I've surfed quite a few blogs and forums and I am pleasantly surprised to see the generational celebration of Adam--all ages!

I feel a new sense of grafeful to AI--inthat they got Adam to us all. Otherwise that gorgeous talent would waste away on just the west coast. I cannot wait for his first CD. I'll wait in a line a mile long in the pouring cold rain, if I have to.

I am voting, BTW, for the first time ever!

EXACTLY - just the opinions ALONE on this forum go to show what kind of impact Adam will have on music. In an age of depressing songs and singers with a one-octave range , Adam DOES stand out from the pack and will have a pretty good career if he chooses to follow the right path. Leave the Daughtry's and Cook's behind - THIS guy has the complete package and leaves those guys in the dust. Freddie Mercury was the king (queen) of cabaret. Adam will follow in his footsteps very auspiciously.

Retro, I think he is taking us by storm. I do not have an ipod, so no itune acct., but I understand from others his music is downloading far surpassing all the others. I noticed on you tube homepage that all the recently viewed videos have something to do w/ Adam. He is peeking interest!

This is something I do not think younger folks understand about us baby-boomers. We, growing up in the 60's were lots more sexually liberal than today's American culture. I have no illusions about Adam. I actually think it's part of his allure.

I played Adam's performance for my hubby. (Ring of Fire) -- that version reminded me so much of "White Rabbit" --LOL--now my hubby has fond memories of that playing in our old VW. (If you know what I mean.) My hubby will probably beat me to the music store for his first CD release!

I really do think Adam will do exceptionally well.

Nope, sorry, I'm not buying it. Come on, hype is hype and I think anyone with half a brain understands the hype machine that is AI... and Who exactly is searching and downloading this guy? The same people that text AI over and over. Look, verbosity and wonderful adjectives aside he IS this year's Daughtry or Cook... And next year there will be ANOTHER "Next big thing".

I'm out; I've wasted enough time on this. Every one is entitled to their opinion; I don't agree with a few voices on this board and am honestly shaking my head at some of the comments... but, well... ah, never mind.

Val, I have seen in 2 of your posts about writing their own stuff--I believe they are under contractoral agreement that they cannot peform any of their own writings during the show. AI copyright dept. clears all their songs. Besides--there are many really good writers of music that cannot sing and many good singers who cannot write.
March 23, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGlenda
Glenda, yeah, I'm aware of that; he does have an original song on youtube that is pretty hideous. My main point on this is that people can compare him to Freddie Mercury all they want but it's like comparing Apples to... um... dog turds. One is palatable while the other comes out of a dog's butt.

I guess it's the prespective each of us come from. I don't see the Freddie thing--but I know others do. Kinda like when you think somebody looks like somebody else and when you say it--the person with you just cannot see it.

We will never see the entire population buy any one singers' work. Nor buy plaid sofas, flowered blouses nor anchovies on pizza. The old adage --different strokes.

I can only speak for myself. I love Adam's sound. I think his range is fabulous. Pitch perfect. Some hear it as screeching--so I have read. I love his look and his dress. I note you hate it. I love it. I admire his open sexuality. To me--nothing worse than a lie. I see him as so talented, yet humble. He projects a polite and a warm personality. For me the purpose of music is to provoke emotion. I get the sexual charge Adam's music gives. Why? I'm open to it. I don't know if any of you have ever picked up body language from Simon. When he is made uncomfortable--he sips his Coke. If you have Adam's Ring of Fire on DVR--replay it. Within the first minute of Adam's performance--you gotta be hormonally dead not to realize how sexual it is. Simon is sipping. I'm comfortable with that--some just won't be.

My perspective is that of a child of the 60's. I think that shapes my taste in just about everything.

I didn't understand the hype surrounding Poison in 1986 , but look what happened. This generation NEEDS a new Crue , a new Van Halen , a new Journey , a new Def Leppard (which I have found by the way - wait for the new release by WILDSTREET on Retrospect Records) - something to get peeps EXCITED about music again. Adam has the potential to do it more than any other AI contestant in the past 8 years - that's the bottom line. Good luck to him.

I'm still home w/ my broken ankle. Time on my hands--sigh. Reading blogs written by ppl working for major news outlets discussing Idol. Do they really get paid? Like--with real money? I do not claim to be an expert in music--by any stretch. But even I knew Adam's ROF was based on a blend of Dilana's and Universal Pass. Even I know they clear copyrights. I cannot believe the dweebs writing these professional blogs have NO idea of any of this. Do they sleep with the boss or something to get these jobs?

When I think of all the student loans my hubby and I had to pay back--just to get a job--and to think these ppl get paid for stupidity--well--Grr!

Hubby is an auto insurance appraiser--don't you wanna know that he knows a rocker panel from a bumper? I'm a dental hygienist--don't you wanna know I know how to use that scaler in my hand? Is it too much to expect that if you get paid for something--it really is something you should get paid for?
