There Is Nothing Good About Hair Metal, Period

I saw a few people Tweeting about Glam last night (via the search function). A few people kept saying "There is nothing good about hair metal, period"

That statement gave me pause.

How can someone just dismiss an entire genre of anything? Surely, these people making such sweeping statements haven't heard all that Glam has to offer. Of course, some people are elitist - and Glam is routinely mocked. Mainstream media always hated our bands back in the day - and they still do. I have no doubt that constant mockery by "critics" has perpetuated the Glam stigma. So, I got to thinking, what would I say to someone that came up at me and said "There is nothing good about hair metal, period."

I think I would tell a person about my childhood memories of Glam, all the fun I've had at shows and all the friends I've made because of this website. In fact, I think I'd talk about the friendships the most. In just about every instance, I've come across people that have become friends by meeting randomly at shows, on message boards and through fan clubs. If the music wasn't good, that wouldn't happen. Sometimes it's not all about the "image" although I still believe a man with a guitar, big hair and makeup is the best. Call me a purist.

What would you say if you heard someone say "There is nothing good about hair metal, period?"

The point was not that "Night Songs" wasn't a pure glam/hair metal record, but that it was a glam/hair metal record recorded by a band that would rather have been doing something bluesier.

Cobain was a rock star, same as any of them. All rock stars are puerile and none of them profound. Go ahead and quote some sophomoric Nirvana lyric if you want -- I'll raise you any number of Steve Tyler lyrics. And Jim Morrison is only profound for as long as you're still high.

Stay, happy, Punk!

I'm not budgin'...

Cinderella is Glam Metal!

...And Cobain was the last great Rock Star!

Who you got?!

p.s. Differences aside, since you are A Happy Punk, are you familiar with the first wave of Punk that began in '76? Just curious because I was and still am way into that stuff (though not as much since my major musical distraction nowadays is Glam Metal, old and new)...

M.!

Didn't see your comments when I made my last one, since yours were on the next page...

Glad your somewhat with me...

I said he was the last great Rock Star...

You are right, Tyler ("Dream On" the perfect example) is legendary and Morrison was incredible as I think you underestimate him.

I actually like Tyler more, but his stuff is way more pop than Cobain or Morrison...

Cobain was more out there like Lennon or Morrison...

More of a poet like those two...

That's why I say he is was the last great Rock Star...

Who else has there been since Lennon, or for that matter, Cobain???...

No kidding...Metal Boy, unbelieveable, right?! Glad you liked them. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard it...and they're from Chicago (I think). You just kind of bummed me out a bit though with the Deluxe Edition...I just have the 10 song disc...where did you happen to find that?! Does it have some extra songs? Pass the word...it hasn't left my car CD player in over a week.

How about Calling Paul Stanley? How friggin' great is that?!

Metalboy, of course I'm familiar with the first wave of Punk from '76, what else is there? Much as I love my glam metal, The Clash, The Stranglers, The Damned, Ramones, Buzzcocks, Dead Boys are all so much fucking cooler. It's all in the attitude. Which brings me back to Cobain being the Last Great Rock Star. He just isn't cool enough, and although he's nailed the self-involved part he's also self-pitying. Plus grunge was just punk all over again, except being more whiny and less angry.
'Ain't it fun when you know that you're gonna die young' < now that is a rock n roll sentiment.
