Confessional: I Love Bon Jovi But I Don't Like "Runaway"

I go to the gym everyday. I wear an iPod to block out all sorts of annoying noises: grunts from guys lifting, females panting and especially from hearing the horrible commercial radio blasting on the gym stereo system. Every once in awhile a rock song comes on and yesterday it was Bon Jovi's "Runaway." I only even knew the song was playing because it came on right as I walked through the doors and didn't yet have my ear buds in place. As I was selecting a torture machine for the daily workout, I sort of stopped and pondered why I despise "Runaway." It's the only classic Bon Jovi song I don't like. Perhaps it's the video?

I've never been able to pin why I don't like the song...it's just so typical Bon Jovi. I love the big Bon Jovi choruses and the keyboard, too and "Runaway" has both.  Plus, Jon is really young and pretty in the video and I usually dig that...but I dunno. There is something about "Runaway" that just makes me freaking cringe. I'm seeing Bon Jovi in July and so help me if they do "Runaway" (and I'm sure they will) this will be my bathroom break. Like, the hair on my arms literally stands on end when "Runaway" comes on...*shudder.*

Do you have songs you can't stand for no reason?

Here's the "Runaway" video for the hell of it. I didn't watch it before posting!

I absolutely cannot stand Bon Jovi anymore. Not sure why, when Slippery When Wet came out I played it non-stop for months. And I have always HATED Def Leppard. Again, not sure why. They are my least favorite of anyhting even remotely associated with Glam Metal. The songs, lyrics, playing, everthing.

"Runaway" is a nice song for us OLD Bon Jovi fans because it takes us (or at least ME) back to when Bon Jovi wasn't "BON JOVI" The song itself is very dated and was only so-so even then. BUT it did get alot of us older fans to take notice. Of course it wasn't till "Slippery" broke that the MASSES began joining. I still remember interviews that Jon did back in the day say how "this next record HAS to be our 'Born to Run.' If its not, we may not get another shot." Months later we all got "shot through the heart" endlessly and repeatedly thanks to radio and MTv.

I do hope they retire "Runaway" at least for awhile and pull it out on the first of many "farewell" tours ala the Who, The Stones, and KISS. LOL

Dont even start me on Def Leppard...WOW. Let me preface with I don't like anything since "Hysteria" and most of THOSE songs are annoying now, but they have a special place in my heart and I dont' HATE any of their music specifically LOL.

I can remember meeting the guys before their opening set in Pittsburg on the Blizzard of Ozz tour. The guys were cool and fun. I was stoked because I loved "Rock Brigade." It would be my first time of seeing them and I had "On Throught the Night" and "High N Dry" and could not wait to rock...THEN the band took the stage. One of THE worst 'live' bands I've ever had the privilege of seeing. I couldn't believe it was the same band that WAILED through my speakers. Literally I almost fell asleep. After the show I hung out with them and was asked how I dug it. Now being somewhat like MetalBoy! I don't have that little thing in my psyche that makes me sensor my thoughts...I told them that the songs kill, but it was kind of boring. YIKES I was waiting for Joe to throw a punch at me. It pissed him off for sure, but Sav kinda smirked (then again it could have been the onset of his Bell's Palsy...I too suffer from the side effects, so I can joke LOL). Later over some Iron City Beers I got to speak one on one with Rick and he asked me about what I said. Shit, who would have thought one fat kid would bug the shit out of "rockstars" LOL. I told him that there music was a lot different than what I had heard and loved, but they performed like everyone else. We kinda just glossed over everything and partied the next couple of hours. ***side note*** I got to watch the show from stage left with Steve Clark and were drunkenly in awe of Randy Rhoads*** I stayed in touch with Steve over the next couple of months and they sent me an autographed copy of "Pyromania" My thank you note back said..."NOW THIS is what you need to LOOK like in the arena!" NEVER did I expect these guys to play arenas, but they did...my last real "meeting" with those guys was on their NWOBM tour that had Iron Maiden play with them here. I was blown away and stayed a fan up to "Hysteria" Even though I had ZERO contact or meetings over the "cool" years LOL.

They started losing me with "Adrenalize" (even though my wife stayed a fan and ultimately I was forced to sit and "mock" enjoyment). I was gone till the greatest hits tour and met up with the Rick Allen and Phil Collen. I joked about my first meeting Rick in 1981 at The Stanley Theater. He laughed and said, "you were that FAT kid?!?" We laughed about it and I told them "Rock Brigade" was STILL my favorite Lep tune. Again, the "fat" kid musta made his mark, because Joe told a story about "playing across the river 20 some years ago at The Stanley Theater." and they kicked into "RB" I took my Doctor to that show (I had some heart problems and he was my boi! The man saved me in more ways than one and Lep was his FAVORITE band-he played Lep during my surgery for himself and Poison for me as I went under sedation--this was my thanks in a very small way to him. He got to meet 3 of the guys (and Viv), Joe was NO WHERE in sight LOL). So the "fat" kid and his Doc had one helluva great time that night to say the least.

Sorry about the rant, but this just brought back a cool memory that I felt the need to share...hey I told you I am unable to "censor" my thoughts and actions hahahaha

You saw RR Live?!?!!? I would sell my soul to have seen that tour! Surprised that many people are as irritated by "Sugar" as me.
March 17, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterShadow
Shadow I saw Randy live 3 times on the "Blizzard Tour" in Pittsburgh, Erie and Johnstown. I saw him on the "Diary" tour twice in Pittsburgh and in Cleveland. Ya get my age you see a LOT of stuff. As many shows as a lot of us "older" rockers have seen I bet I am one of the only ones who have seen Hendrix live, Bon Scott live (ac/dc OPENED for Michael Stanley band in one of the many times I saw them LOL), The Stones WITH Brian Jones (at an amusment park called West View Park when i was a tot), the Doors in Pittsburgh (some of the tunes were on Absolutely Live), The "REAL" WHO with Moon, Zeppelin (with Bonham), Skynyrd (with Ronnie on vocals)..I just recently won $100 bucks from a guy that said he saw Journey on the first tour with Steve Perry and Gregg Rollie...I asked him who opened the show and he was unsure, well it was none other than VAN HALEN on their VERY FIRST Pittsburgh show...I have the ticket and he freaked out. SO lots of memories and plenty of great times, but ya live long enough, you'll have that LMAO!

Only The Shadow Knows!

Hey, I might not agree with some of your Disses but hey, at least you have an opinion.

I do agree that "Even Flow" is so UNROCK and let me add, that IMHO, Vedder sounds like he's having a yodeling contest with himself on it, let alone everything else they forced on us.

I'm hoping more people like you will keep this thread going. Al came up with such a great one here.
March 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMetalboy!
Oh, yeah, Shadow, I almost listed "Don't Stop Believin'".

I used to despise Journey back in the day but then I learned to appreciate them beyond the cheeziness and actually kinda like 'em (partly because of the retro-cheeziness of it all), even though they really are the pinnacle of Cheeze and not in a fun way, but in a thoroughly boring way.

Besides, like a couple of the others on some of my lists on this stream (which has slowed to a trickle and I wish I had weighed in on it more often much earlier), the stuff really isn't Hair Metal but AOR with Hair Metal-like Hairdo's with thorough backing band Mullet action (i.e. Journey, Bad English, Hardline... hmmm... bet you can guess the mullet trend here... in fact, that could be a post unto itself... "The Life of Neil Schoen's Mullet").

So, this Hair Metal like AOR, that usually deployed the most ugly and tasteless hair do's (Journey), stage wear (Journey), album covers (Journey), logos (Journey), etc. (Journey), kinda gets lumped in with a lot of the stuff we love on here because of the fact that their utterly tasteless songs (Journey) contain elements of some of the sappier stuff of the bands that really fit the mold of the Glam Metal we love on here (Poison), but it's actually the other way around.

Hey, Journey had the hits with this Midwestern (sorry, Midwestern Metallerz, you know what I mean) AOR Boring-Rock Formula so the likes of Bon Anchovy, Poisson, Warcan't, Firehose, etc., thought they'd follow suit, although, I will say, to much better effect, since they stuck closer to Rock and Roll than Journey did, as Journey layered on elements of Prog and Jazz-Rock fusion (Junk Rock) into the sound of all of their little pop confections.

I'm actually still trying to figure out how a bunch of psuedo-hippies from San Franscisco in matching Garanimals Members Only jackets could sound like they came from the local Guitar Center jam room in Fargo.

It really makes me believe Schoen didn't get any of Zappa's humor and irony in the lyrics and music of Zappa's recordings he played on (Zoot Allures), but did like all the mock -cheeze of all of Zappa's Prog and Jazz-Rock forrays he dragged with him into Journey after he left Zappa and where he inflicted upon us much more uninspired applications of such elements, revealing that he probably didn't get the irony and cheeze of Zappa's musical milieu at all.

So, as much as I love going to Ladies Night at the Mondrian Miami and watching hundreds of writhing 21-year-old blondes waving their arms in the air, as though they had lighters in their hands, when the DJ, out of the blue, after going through the de riguer motions of playing Jay Z's "Empire State" and Lady GaGa's "Paparazzi", continues going through the motions by playing "Don't Stop Believin'", as the place goes wild, I have to admit, Journey and their lovely, "Don't Stop Believin', with Steve Perry's killer chops and all, and all the rest of their crappy-sappy crap, are really so UNROCK!

Still, I kinda like Journey, or at least the nostalgia of it. And the fact that thoze Miami blondes dig it. And I like Steve's hair, though his nose kinda bugged me (but he probably needed it to keep his voice, so I'll let him hold onto it... but lose the keyboard ruffles and flourishes already, will ya? So UNROCK!)
March 23, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMetalboy!
I actually like Journey to a point. Don't stop believin is so much better live with the faster temper and loudness. To tell ya the truth I've had ask the lonely stuck in my head the last three days along with Calling on you by stryper. Musically i think there are some good elements although i will say lovin touchin' etc is kinda repetative. One thing about journey though, they did pen Faithfully which is in my mind possibly the best power ballad of all time.
March 23, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterShadow
Only The Shadow Knows!

As usual!

Yeah, as much as I've busted on 'em here, like I said, Journey are kind of a guilty pleasure for me, also.

I was thinkin' I'd spare y'all the other Luvroxx lists until you want 'em. This is a fair amount of stuff to get a hold of though, so it should keep you rockin' for awhile. I also left off stuff I thought you might already have. And I put a * next to tunes I think sound pretty similar to "Faithfully" though nobody among these singers has the chops to hold a candle to Steve Perry.

Still, I thought there might be a couple on here you might enjoy, yet I admit quite a few are some of the finest examples of Cheeze Metal you can find.

Bon Appetit!

I have dreamin about you by kick axe and it certainly rocks. Ah yes broken promises by survivor almost forgot, my best friend (ironically a journey nut who is dating my sister awkward yes) tolod me about that song when he got their greatest hits or something I have to check out the Stryper one. Didya hear about their new cover album?
March 24, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterShadow
There's the Shadow! Like the Shadow of the "Nick Danger" character on the cover of the first "Danger Danger" album...

The most Rock'n'Roll Shadow I know...

Dude! Yeah, you'll love that Stryper cut. And those others I starred (*). As far as the Stryper covers album, I gotta check it out. I can barely keep up with all the new stuff now, though I am still forcing myself to do it.

My current trip is demo's of L.A. Strip bands and other stuff that went largely unreleased in the U.S., mainly circa '89 - '92, as many of these were "The Almosts", as good as the bands that got signed but too late in the game.

Others are horrible, which is also amusing, but not as much for my wallet. I have found some "corkers", tho, the latest being "Heaven Can Wait" by Casanova (never released in the U.S.!) which kinda sound like a cross between Stryper and Faster Pussycat (What th...?!)...

Speaking of Stryper... Did you hear what I heard... That Michael Sweet was joining Boston as lead singer? I'd pay to see that. Better Google that one now...
March 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMetalboy!
Old news my friend old news. You are talking to a Boston nut here.

I'll bring you up to speed: Once brad Delp died sometime before the tribut concert tom scholz met up with Sweet and eventually this is how the relationship started. Sweet has toured with Boston since then and is the lead singer for the new album due out before i die. THe album in question is due out in 2010. All the music on the album will be written by Scholz and Sweet unlike the Corporate America album which featured several more authors which i believe did the album in.

This new album in addition to the new originals will feature three songs from corporate america that have been remixed and redone and will be featured on the new album. Corporate America, Someone, and You gave up on love have been confirmed as the tracks. Delp is supposed to be the singer so i don't know how that will work.
Hopefully with sweet in cohoots this will be the heaviest "metalist" album Boston will have released. Walk On i believe holds that title simply because of tech. reasons. (its my favorite album, and the album that started it all for me.) Corporate America was ok but this should be lightyears ahead of it.

The playlist for the Cover album Stryper is doing is posted on their facebook but I;ll try and get ahold of it.
here we are in no order

1.Over the mountain-ozzy
2.The Trooper-Iron Maiden
3.Breaking the law- Judas Priest
4.Carry on wayward son-kansas
5. On fire Van Halen
6.Lights Out-UFO
7.Immigrant Song- Led Zepplin
8.HIghway Star- Deep Purple
9.Blackout-Scorps
10.Shout it out loud-KISS
11.Heaven and Hell-Black Sabbath
12.Set Me Free-Sweet
13 God-(original)

Whaddya say to those?

I'm not worthy!

Can't wait for that Stryper album. Wholly Guacamole!

Is Boston gonna tour with Sweet any time soon? How the hell did I miss that when it first happened? I'm a frickin' neophyte!

Love Boston, bro! Notice I didn't trash them this go around.

p.s. Hey, Shad, you comin' to M3, man?

Nah, gotta be tight with my money man. I'm going to take a semester in Austria next spring semester starting in Jan. so i'm making all the money i can make. I wanna go some concerts while I'm in Europe. Plus the plane tickets a bitch.

According to The band's site Scholz doesn't want ot tour until the new album is out. thats how Stryper is opperating independently now. Hopefully if i comes out this year they should tour by next summer.

PLEASE GOD GIVE US THIS ALBUM!!!!
