New Nelson Music On The Way

Nelson will release a new album called Peace Out on May 19th. You can check out some samples below. The songs are catchy, just like all Nelson tracks. The new album is coming out on Frontiers.

Wholly uninspired, like ALL Nelson songs. Sorry, Al... I tried, but I could only get through the first couple. "Rockstar" showed promise, but like the rest of their stuff, is so predictable, you can guess the lyrics and chord changes nano-seconds before they happen.

You would think these guys would have strived for the originality and genuineness their father evolved to...

For those who might not know, Rick (aka Ricky) Nelson, the Nelson Twins' Dad, wrote "Garden Party" after being booed off stage in 1971 for playing new country rock tinged tunes, not just the oldies the crowd expected. "Garden Party" went on to be a #1 hit in 1972.

The now classic line, "You can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself.", should be a coda for his twin songs to strive for something a little fresher and more real than this pablum. Just like their Daddy did.

Hmmmm, it's not great, but it's not bad either. I actually like this one more than the stuff they put out back in the day, (Pun intended.) And Metalboy!, my friend, Garden Party is quite simply one of the best tunes ever written. It's not just a recounting of that one concert, but IMHO, it is also a comment on the whole music business at the time. "Yoko brought her walrus", is one of my favorite lyrics of all time.

I knew Matt & Gun in the late 80's & really liked their 1st 2 records. This seems like it attempts to go back to that vibe, but also is a bit lazy in the songwriting... Tell me "Rockstar" isn't a re-lyric'd version of Bon Jovi's "Have A nice Day"... You guys are better songwriters than this.

Yeah, Ace, I met these guys on the elevator on the first Monsters of Rock Cruise. Nicest guys. Down to earth and genuinely interested in hearing how their Dad was an inspiration to me with his epiphany as described in the lyrics of "Garden Party". I never mentioned their sh*t.

So, Bob, I obviously agree and when you listen to those lyrics, their relevance transcends beyond just the music business... "Garden Party" is a life lesson!

GARDEN PARTY
Words & Music by Rick Nelson

I went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends
A chance to share old memories and play our songs again
When I got to the garden party, they all knew my name
No one recognized me, I didn't look the same

CHORUS
But it's alright now, learned my lesson well
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself

People came from miles around, everyone was there
Yoko brought her walrus, there was magic in the air
'n' over in the corner, much to my surprise
Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes wearing his disguise

CHORUS

lot-in-dah-dah-dah, lot-in-dah-dah-dah

Played them all the old songs, thought that's why they came
No one heard the music, we didn't look the same
I said hello to "Mary Lou", she belongs to me
When I sang about a honky-tonk, it was time to leave

CHORUS

lot-dah-dah-dah (lot-dah-dah-dah)
lot-dah-dah-dah

Someone opened up a closet door and out stepped Johnny B. Goode
Playin' guitar like a-ringin' a bell and lookin' like he should
If you gotta play at garden parties, I wish you a lotta luck
But if memories were all I sang, I'd rather drive a truck

CHORUS

lot-dah-dah-dah (lot-dah-dah-dah)
lot-in-dah-dah-dah

'n' it's all right now, learned my lesson well
You see, ya can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself
