From my inbox. Queensryche will release The Verdict on March 1. One of the songs on that album is "Dark Reverie." Check it out:

Bellevue, Washington - January 14, 2019 - Queensrÿche have just dropped their newest track "Dark Reverie" today via Century Media Records.

"Dark Reverie" is a guitar driven progressive ballad addressing self-reflection during times of tragedy and the questions we ask ourselves while grieving," states Parker Lundgren about their latest track release.
"Dark Reverie" is the second song Queensryche has released, following "Man The Machine", off of their forthcoming full-length album. The Verdict was produced, mixed, and mastered by Zeuss (Rob Zombie, Iced Earth, Hatebreed) at Uberbeatz in Lynwood, WA, Planet-Z in Wilbraham, MA and Watershed Studio in Seattle, WA.
In support of their forthcoming release, Queensrÿche will hit the road starting March 2nd' in Orlando for their headline tour, making stops in major markets such as New York, Atlanta, Chicago, and Los Angeles, and will wrap on April 3rd in Seattle. Fates Warning will join the band on tour as support, with The Cringe joining both bands on select dates.

This is without Geoff Tate, Chris DeGarmo and now Scott Rockingfield, The fact that this is called Queensryche is pathetic. The fact that they hide the fact Rockingfield left the band over 2 years ago is a disgrace. Other than that, go nuts. :)

I didn't know all that. I knew about Geoff and Chris, obviously. I did see this line up, it was OK, but I'm glad I saw the original lineup (of course, they played all of Mindcrime)

Sounds pretty cool ... But can hardly call them Queensryche anymore ... It is only Queensryche for marketing purposes these days ...

Agreed, Neal.

I saw them open for Scorpions several years ago in Columbus (I'm assuming it is still the same singer, whoever replaced Tate). I enjoyed the original songs they did at the time, but was not impressed by his attempts to mimic Tate on the older songs. This song isn't terrible, but it won't be added to my personal playlist.

JT, I saw them with the Scorps during their residency in Vegas. I thought La Torre did a pretty good job imitating Tate across the board (and I wanted to hate them and just get drinks until the Scorps went on). The classic era Tate is hard to beat and/or imitate.

But Sparky is right. This is not Ryche. It is Ryche-ish. And who is that playing those drums? Well, I think it is La Torre. So I guess they hired him to do double duty.

I'm not going to troll them and say they lost their purity when DeGarmo left, or their voice when Tate and them had that Insania-induced implosion. What I will say is this: there is less and less about them that sounds like Ryche. And with Rockenfield gone that distance from their past is even more pronounced. Luckily, they can get La Torre to emulate that classic sound vocally. And I think a lot of people will give them a pass if they are mid-bill (or lower) on a festival ticket or playing a club.

Wilton and Co. fought to keep the name. They got it. To me, their only hope is to something that can compete with their legacy if they want to be viable in this market. I wish them luck, as this will only appeal to a diehard segment of their most devoted fan base.

But I will finally add: Tate goes around talk-crooning and you can still get a sense that he is the voice (greatly diminished). And even in his current state, competing for those club gigs, he still seems to pull off something that the Ryche guys can't . . . if only in front of a smattering of people. That said, his product when compared to this is nothing. He is left to indulge the same tendencies that led to them losing fans when he was in the band. That is, when he is not doing another Mindcrime tour (the right to play in its entirety now being something that he owns).

Musically this is not bad, i quite liked it. Lyrically, it’s just a bunch of cliches strung together, often non-sensically (e.g “nothing lasts forever, just revolving doors”) and the “Down, down on me” chorus sounds lame to my ears. I say this as someone who has enjoyed the two La Torre albums and have a few if those albums’ songs (Where Dreams Go to Die, Redemption, Arrow of Time) on my modern hard rock/metal playlist. I only began getting into old Ryche after their heyday had passed so I didn’t develop an affection for the original lineup; so perhaps it’s easier for me to enjoy this even with 2-4 members as long as it’s good (same as, for instance, Deep Purple’s Mark IV, which only had two original members). But so far no sale yet. Still, I’ll keep an open mind.

I actually love Todd La Torre in Queensryche. I'm not a diehard fan but he is one hell of a singer and has great stage presence. This is definately not on par with the older stuff but it's still a decent song nonetheless. Probably worth checking out the new album.

La Torre has certainly grown into his position as the front man. I grant that. But it doesn't feel casual or natural. I won't complain about his approximation of Tate vocally (see previous post), as that really does seem to be what he is doing in Ryche, esp. when you compare how he sings in that band to how he sang in Crimson Glory. But Tate, as smarmy and out of step as he is these days, still commands a stage. He has something that La Torre doesn't. Then again, La Torre has the range that Tate doesn't these days!

Nice to hear that there are some newer fans of this band giving the new version a more open-minded listen. I appreciate that.
