Def Leppard To Participate In 'Record Store Day'

Record Store Day is set for April 19. According to the official Record Store Day website, the event "...was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica."

Now you can purchase a special "part 2" edition of The Story So Far. Click through for details on how to purchase this special edition. There is still one really awesome record store within 20 miles of my house. Hopefully you are lucky enough to live near an actual record store, too.

Oh great, just what the world needs... another greatest hits collection from Def Leppard. What's next, a book about a diminutive lil elf that refuses to ever put a shirt on, regardless of his advanced age and even more advanced receding hairline. Lmao

Yeah, what a cop out!

Record Store Day is supposed to be a celebration of all that is unique and different about indy record stores where you can find lost treasures such as an original press of RATT’s first EP on vinyl, a rare out-of-print 12” picture sleeve single copy of “Photograph” or picture sleeve 45 of “Smokin’ In The Boys Room” by Mötley Crüe.

Most of these stores are like museums with lots of memorabilia, posters and other rare collectibles. One store near me has a full set of vintage “Shout At The Devil” era Crüe dolls still in their original packages. And the Soup Nazi-like owner loves to impolitely remind you, “NOT for sale!” everytime you ask, all of which adds to the charm.

I’ve noticed a lot of bands have taken to release unique instant collectibles such as Cheap Trick. They’re special releases on Record Day include limited edition 8-tracks, picture sleeve 45’s and the like.

So you mean to tell me Def Leppard, with all their back catalogue probably containing a stray unreleased track or two or Steve Clarke era live concert recordings, they couldn’t choke up something cool to put out on this special day other than yet another Greatest Hits package? And with unimpressive cover graphics to boot?

You would think a 70’s Glam Rock loving band like Def Leppard would release a cover of Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll (Part 2)” (wait, Crüe already did that) or something. I mean, what’s going on here? Are they wanting to beat KISS and Crüe for greatest number of Greatest Hits Albums released?

Or are they just perpetuating the uninspired Record Machine marketing that continually plagues the industry, ironically of which Record Day is meant to be the antithesis.

Wake up, dear heroes before you’re junked into the cut-out bins of Rock & Roll history!
