Paul Stanley In The Studio - An Update

Paul Stanley is in the studio right now, working on his debut Soul Station record. From Paul's recent social posts, it looks like that album is almost done. Yes, Paul Stanley has an R&B band if you didn't know. The Smokey Robinson cover Paul released a few weeks ago is really cool. The harmonies are amazing! The video is below.

This man is someone I've admired and obsessed over since I was 11. KISS was my life growing up. I have seen them probably 30 times over the last 40 years.

But I don't have much of a desire to even listen to him doing Soul. I am not dissing that genre, it is just not my cup of tea.

And I supported his previous solo efforts in the past but they were rock albums. I don't feel bad about not supporting this. He has made a ton off me over the last 40 plus years.

I admire that he is doing what he wants to do. Good for him.

Great to see you posting, Rita!

I can certainly understand where you are coming from. This is Star Man pursuing his interests because he can. And he has a good roster of artists involved, many of them with excellent cred for this type of music..

But, yeah, if you don't like it, no harm. I think this suits him these days, esp. considering the state of his voice these days. With this project, he has the artists backing him mellow out the places where he is 'pitchy, dawg'. At least none of it is backing tracks (I think?).

As I said before, these musicians follow their interests because they can. KISS made/makes millions. It will interest some. Not others. For me, if it gets people interested in the originals, that is a good thing. Stanley is picking some good staples. But a deeper dive might be rewarding for some,. Who knows?

I hope you are doing well, Rita. Glad to see your post.

Hi Him,

Thanks very much for your comments. I am well and hope you are doing well also.

I agree with you. I have always felt, out of a sense of obligation that I should support my favorite artists. But this one just does not draw me in like his other solo projects.

And he, and others like him, have earned the right to do what they want and if people like it, great. And if they don't, too bad. I'm ok with that. I just don't see this one making it into my playlists. But I am glad he is still around doing his thing. Hope he is around for a long time.

Rita!, my long lost Heavy Metal Love!

Glad to hear you are well, particularly all things considered.

It’s terrible to be like this, but I don’t even think I’ll listen to this based on your’s and HIM’s comments.

Stanley should produce new bands ... I understand it’s riskier with COVID but maybe there’s a way he could do it which could work ... Working remotely or, better yet, he stays in a hermetically sealed control room and the band can be in a recording studio.

He produced one of THE GREATEST American AOR POP Hard Rock albums (wait is that an oxymoron?) ever made, NEW ENGLAND’s eponymous first album from 1979, featuring the now classic, “Don’t Ever Wanna Lose Ya” of which Stanley should be extremely proud!

So why doesn’t he just kick his production talents into gear and BRING BACK GLAM!!!

Great idea Metalboy!

And I get that they want to do something different that ramps up the level of excitement for them. Everybody needs a change. But sometimes, change is just different, and not better. So I am pretty sure, I will pass on this one.

And thanks, hope you are doing well and keeping safe too.

Again, nice to see you posting Rita. I miss your input.

And, Metalboy!, you know where I stand with you. WHERE IS MY GIFT!?!?! I kid.

My main take-away from Stanley's Soul Station (that sounds like a diner in Detroit) is that he might, just might, get some fans interested in the originals he is covering with a stellar roster of backing artists. I know this isn't metal, or even metal-adjacent. But Smokey Robinson and some of the other artists this band has covered live are deserving of a new listen from the next set of ears.

Perhaps it won't be Stanley who does it for us (and perhaps some of us already--like me--enjoy the bands he is covering). But maybe he will do it for some of his younger and newer fans. Imagine a KISS fan who finds out how cool Otis Redding was? Or The Spinners? If you are going to do what you want to do because you can, I can think of far worse ways to do it.
