‘Gimme Some Lovin’’

Picture it: southern Ohio, a warm fall day and your Glam mistress is driving to the store to get milk. Flipping through the channels of her satellite radio, she pauses and gasps. Hair Nation, of all channels, is actually playing something different for a change. The song is Great White’s cover of “Gimme Some Lovin’” from their 1986 album Shot In The Dark.

“Gimme Some Lovin’” was originally recorded by the Spencer Davis Group in 1966. The song was a top 10 hit for the group and has been covered by lots of other artists in the decade since its original release.

It made sense for Great White to cover the song for their second album. The band was obviously moving into their signature blues rock sound, and they wanted something recognizable too.

Hair Nation plays Great White all the time - but basically just a rotation of “Save Your Love,” “Rock Me,” “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” and (my favorite) “House of Broken Love.” To hear something different by a Hair Nation regular was such a treat. I definitely enjoyed the short diversion from “Nothin’ But A Good Time,” “Round and Round,” and “Dr. Feelgood.”

I have no idea why Hair Nation doesn’t rotate its songs more often. There’s an app-only channel that plays deeper cuts, but the main channel should as well. I know, I know. I’m preaching to the choir. But still. There’s so many great Glam deep cuts from our favorites that never get highlighted to a more casual audience. A pity.
