In Your Cassette Era?
Does anyone around these parts still collect cassettes? Or, have you taken up the hobby since bands are releasing special editions on cassette these days?
I always had lots of cassettes, but far more CDs. Cassettes were “work” - with all the rewinding and fast forwarding. That “work” meant it was easier to listen to a side completely and then turn it over to repeat.
Listening to every track on a single album over and over makes a person intimately connected to the artist and music. This connection is likely why many of us still adore our 80s heroes so much.
I got rid of nearly all my cassettes when I moved from college to my first apartment. No one was really making cassettes back then, and I owned everything I loved on CD anyway.
Maybe on my next thrift run, I’ll make an extra effort to look for some 80s cassettes. Perhaps it’s time I build my collection back up again.
