Metal Church vs Aerosmith

Aerosmith’s “Toys in the Attic” is a classic hard rock tune. In fact, it’s one of the band’s best - and the title track of the amazing album of the same name. It’s been a live staple for the band since its release in 1975.

When a song becomes iconic, it gets the “covers” treatment. Many acts have covered “Toys,” including Warrant, R.E.M., BPMD, and RATT, but one of my favorites is by Metal Church.

The song is on the 1999 Metal Church release Masterpeace. I love that album name, by the way.

In the Metal Church version, there’s nothing but respect on display. The song is true to its roots and pays homage to Aerosmith. There isn’t anything wild about the way Metal Church does the song. This isn’t a thrash version of Aerosmith. It is not a parody. David Wayne’s vocals are higher-pitched than Steven Tyler’s, and that is the main difference between the versions.

Wayne died in 2005, and Masterpeace was his last album with Metal Church.

So many lineup changes later, Metal Church still tours and releases new music. In fact, the band is playing the Louder Than Life festival later this month.
