Sonic Saturday: Bear McCreary

I decided to do a little thing each Saturday: feature a random act from the upcoming Sonic Temple festival. This first post was easy. Across the entire lineup, the only act I’d never heard of was Bear McCreary. He’s on the mainstage too - same day as Iron Maiden.

So Bear McCreary is an American composer. He works in film, TV, and video games. One of his most famous works is the main theme for Outlander. I write this as someone who has never seen a single episode of Outlander, but I know that makes me very much in the minority.

Looking through Wikipedia at McCreary’s long list of works, I have to say I haven’t seen any of the movies or TV shows. I don’t game, so all those titles are out for me, too. My entertainment choices lean heavily toward books, music, reality TV, newspapers and the NFL. For the most part, I am not a movie girl, but there are some films I see, of course. I am not a total hermit.

All that aside, McCreary released a rock album over the summer called The Singularity: Ekleipsis. Guests include Slash, Duff McKagan and Chad Smith. McCreary calls his rock project The Singularity. Ekleipsis is the follow-up to the 2024 release The Singularity.

Of the rock project, McCreary’s website says:

In 20,24 McCreary released an ambitious hard rock concept album of the same name featuring guest appearances by an extraordinary lineup of rock talent. Now McCreary announces the release of The Singularity: Ekleipsis, the eagerly awaited follow-up album, which continues the metal saga of a damaged world in turmoil. Ekleipsis draws its name from the ancient Greek word meaning abandonment, and explores themes of disillusionment and perseverance through struggle.

Reading all this, I have to say I think that McCreary will have one of the most interesting sets of the entire festival. It will surely be unique.
