Spotify’s ‘Most Streamed’ List - 20 Year Edition

Well, this list is shocking. Spotify is celebrating 20 years during 2026. To mark the anniversary, the platform just released the top 20 “most streamed” artists over those two decades. No question Taylor Swift would be at the top and I knew Bad Bunny would be in the top 5.

The surprises come when you realize there’s only one rock act on the list… and it is Coldplay.

How is that even possible?

You’re telling me over the past 20 years, more people streamed Coldplay than Aerosmith or Queen or Metallica or the freaking Beatles?

This has to be age metered, right? Look, I don’t use Spotify. Never have really. But it’s a popular option for most because it’s easy. Now, there’s a difference between raw talent and mainstream popularity. Metal is never going to be more popular than pop. That’s just the way it is.

I do note that not one country artist made the list. “Country is the most popular form of music” is a popular line in mainstream music journalism when talking about any artist that isn’t country. Still, Garth Brooks didn’t make the list which is something. Taylor Swift doesn’t count because she hasn’t been country since like her second album.

I guess us olds just can’t compete with the streaming youngsters. I stream every day through Amazon. I also still buy vinyl and listen to my favorite albums released back before I was in high school. I’m not sure what the list below means… if it means anything at all. But it still gave me a jolt.
