A Moment Like This

Oh, and another one!

I about wet myself last night when Joe Perry - my Joe Perry - performed with Sanjaya Malakar and Kelly Clarkson on the American Idol finale.

With Sanjaya, he performed The Kinks "You Really Got Me." A little later he performed as part of a Beatles medley, as Clarkson belted-out "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band."

I've decided for Joe this isn't selling out, but a genius form of marketing.

Here's the video of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band" as performed by Joe Perry and Kelly Clarkson.

Never expected to see Joe Perry on American Idol! But I agree, it is a pretty good marketing move...

I don't think Joe Perry can sell out at this point. Aerosmith had sketchy periods (particularly as the drugs caught up with them), but there are a number of good albums between the debut and Pump. Get a Grip had a few moments, but it was really at that point that Aerosmith began to lose control of their music. The presence of outside songwriting help (to help them sound like Aerosmith!) became more prevalent and they just became a facsimile of themselves (kinda like the Stones). By now, there's really nothing left that's really, truly Aerosmith and therefore, nothing to sell out.

Funny, I would have said the album AFTER Get a Grip is where the new stuff started to suck. But, what old bands make good albums ? Bon Jovi now sucks, period, I can't even name all the new Poison CDs or get them in order, Motley have done a horrible grunge CD and a CD that tried to sound old school and was boring, Metallica is total crap now, the list goes on.

Aerosmith can do no wrong in my book - I saw them live, and they wisely playing nearly all old stuff, as do all these other bands. The fact is that people's tastes do change with time, it's hard for a band to both move, and move in a way that pleases the fans. I don't care how bad the new discs are, the old discs are the reason Aerosmith are gods.

I couldn't figure out why Joe would waste his time with Idol. That whole appearance left me scratching my head. Especially considering how poorly Sanjaya can sing.
