Feels Like the First Time

Some covers just impress me.

I was out and about over the weekend and I heard Daughtry's version of “Feels Like the First Time.” You know, the old Foreigner hit. Well, the song gave me pause. I'm not a big Daughtry fan but I had to listen close – at first it was hard for me to tell the difference between the cover and the original. Then, there was some signature Daughtry vocal moves and I knew what was going on. (I'm talking about a lot of vibrato here).

You already know I'm not a big fan of covers. Usually, I'd just rather listen to the original and be done with it...but I really liked this updated version of “Feels Like the First Time.” I guess Daughtry recorded the song for CNN during the 2008 presidential campaign...for their “first time voter” series. Yeah. But anyway, I think the song rocks just as hard as the original. Have a listen.

And the original

Argh!

Daughtry?

You really know how to bait me...

Look, the guy can obviously sing, but covers are all I can barely stand (and we're talkin' like the first 25 seconds of a song) from this hyper-commercial, pre-packaged cartoon of an entertainer.

For more Daughtry "fun" check out his new cover of "Photograph" on Santana's latest Clive Davis engineered sell-out attempt, "Guitar Heaven", a whipped off covers album featuring a different vocalist on each track, some good some ARGH, like this Daughtry character.

Got one word for this sort of thing...

D-U-M-B!

Here's what I think are some great covers of recent memory:

"Highway Star", Buckcherry
"18 And Life", Hydrogen
"Refugee", Vains of Jenna
"Separate Ways (World's Apart)", Andre Coehlo Matos
"This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us", British Whale (British Whale is Justin Hawkin's band for 5 minutes after Darkness doing a Sparks cover!)
"When The Lights Are Out", Cheap Trick
"Transformers", Cheap Trick
"In A Gadda Da Vida", Blind Guardian
"Holy Diver", Killswitch Engage
"Bad Company", Five Finger Death Punch
"Freebird", Towers Of London

These covers ROCK!

Daughtry is just so UNROCK!

p.s. After everyone says Daughtry suxx (just kiddin'... I'm ready to hear you make your case if you DO, indeed, like him), I would be interested to know some other covers of late people like...

That Cheap Trick cover pales in comparison to Lions Verison from 86!! heh, heh.

Bad Company is a great cover! In fact its gotten me really into FFDP.

Hmm, recent covers well I guess ozzy's cover of How?in the last month is at least entertaining, now mississippi queen off 2003's undercover has a lot more going for it.

Daughtery is good but yeah commercial with a capitol C however he came from american idol so what else is new?

Sabra Cadabra by Metallica cover of Black Sabbath blows the orginal away.

Tangled Up In Blue by Great White cover of Bob Dylan

Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic by Ra cover of the Police

I Love You by Tesla cover of Climaxx Blues Band

Stealin by Tesla cover of Uriah Heep

Dreams I'll Never see by Molly Hatchet cover of Allman Brothers

To name a few....

And I like Five Finger Death Punch, but I find the cover of Bad Company to be atrocious...the song is Bad Company by the band - Bad Company. There is no way that song needed to be redone. That's like unwritten rule, isn't it ?

"Signs" From Tesla - Original was The 5 Man Electrical band

"Turn The Page" From Metallica - Bob Seger Original

I also like Greenday's version of John Lennon's 'Working Class Hero"

And of course Buck Cherry's version of Highway Star makes me want to slam my head against a wall it rocks that freaking hard!

Daughtry's voice really bothers me. Plus, just as with the hatchet job he did on Photograph on the steaming pile of feces that is the new Santana covers album, they have to tune down the foreigner song so he can hit the notes. dude, Lou Gramm and Joe Elliott you are not!

I can't stand Daughtry. Metalboy summed it up pretty nice for me, actually.

I love cover songs. Great songs stand the test of time, regardless of who sings them. Granted, there are also lots of bad covers, but there's something really fun about them when well done. Some of my favorites:

- Last Caress, Metallica (original: Misfits)
- Holidays in the Sun, Skid Row (original: Sex Pistols)
- Desolation Row, My Chemical Romance (original: Bob Dylan)
- Turn the Page, Metallica (original: Bob Segar)
- Up Around the Bend, Hanoi Rocks (orignal: CCR)

There are lots of others, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

I'm going to go out on a limb here. The new Santana definitly is not tasteful, he overplays on it, but I still thought it was fun and I LOVE the cover of 'fortunate son' on the special edition.

Vince Neil's "Bitch is Back" and "AC DC" covers ROCK! Say what you will about Vince, but he can still 'bring it' every once in a while. Check these songs out.

Ah! Mewizemagic! I forgot those Vince Neil covers of late. They are great! Especially his recent cover of Cheap Trick's "He's A Whore" from their first album.

I had the pleasure of watching his killer performance of it at M3 before both the sound system and he himself blew up.

p.s. I agree with you, Shad, Lion's original is better. Don't even get me started on covers from back in the day. Two killarious covers from the glory days are the Glametalized versions of Kenny Loggin's "Maniac", originally from the movie "Flashdance" by Sargant Fury circa '95 and my latest score, "Crazy", a cover of the Seal hit by the late 80's Hair Metal band, Toy Roz.

"Signs" by Tesla. I like the originals by Five Man Electric Band, but the Tesla version does the song more justice. It is so grooving and I love the level of angst that is added. It makes me want to stand up and say F**K You to whoever tries to put me down. So rockin'. However, I do appreciate Tesla giving a nod to F.M.E.B. by calling their live MTV special Five Man Acoustical Band.

I do believe it's Firewind who recently covered Maniac as a bonus track...

And I'm afraid I thought Vince's covers album was pure crap.

HOW COULD I FORGET!! The upcoming cover by Stryper of Over the moutain and their recent cover of Boston's Piece of Mind. DUH!!
October 19, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterShadow
Christian! You ever heard Sargent Fury's cover of "Maniac" from '95? Killer!

Shad, I forgot you told me to check out Stryper's covers. I'll be ready!

Also, a band from the late 80's/early 90's, Bad Habit, did an incredible, if a little too religiously close to the original, rendition of Boston's masterpiece, "More Than A Feeling"... I think you boyz would find it amazing even if they shoulda punched up the guitars a bit more...

Just snagged another ultra rare disc... Florence 99 from 1988, released on Warner Bros. Italy. They do a killer Glam Metallized amped up version of Laura Branigan's "Gloria", hahaha!!!

Hey, your post on Saxon reminded me of one of the greatest Metal Makeovers of a song ever... Saxon's cover of Christopher Cross' "Ride Like The Wind"!

Priceless!
