L.A. Guns, 'Araña Negra' -- New Video

L.A. Guns (Phil Lewis version) has released a new video for "Araña Negra" from the upcoming album Hollywood Forever, which is due out June 5 via Cleopatra. The song is a cover from the Bicicletas. After watching this clip three times I have to say... I just don't like this song very much. I won't hold it against L.A. Guns since the song is a cover. I still have high hopes for the new record. Do you like "Araña Negra?"

I'll hold it against L.A. guns because why in the h*ll did they pick it as a cover?

Just like an original, they have to reverse the h*ll out of it in order to record and play it. If it sucks as a song why bother? Would Tracy have selected it?

Here's another example of why "versions" of bands don't work in a way that never really occured to me. Where is the tyrant (read "tastemeister"), like Tracii, who would yell down such an exercise in futility?

I am a huge LA Guns fan (and can we stop saying Phil's version...this is LA Guns and now is the ONLY one using that name!), but this song does not do it for me. Liked some of the other stuff that i have heard from the album though. But this song sucks and its not even in English! WTF?

L.A. Guns were / are one of my favorite bands from the era, but everything about that video stunk.

(This goes for Warrant, and a few other bands too)...
If you want to continue touring as a legacy act, playing your hits without key members, that is one thing - but why tarnish your recorded legacy with crap like this??

Yeah it's Phil's voice blah blah blah,,, that ^ doesn't sound like L.A. Guns to me.

Change the name if you want to record new stuff, or else just be happy touring as your own cover band.

I liked the last LA Guns album but this is not good. Bland.Phil still sounds good though. Not having Tracii is a biggie, very underrated guitarist.

Not sure this justifies the cover, but Riley gave this explanation over at Sleaze Roxx:

-------------------------------
Sleaze Roxx: How did the cover of The Bicecletas' "Arana Negara" wind up on the album?

Steve Riley: That was Phil's idea. He went to Argentina to do a solo acoustic show opening for Duff McKagan's band Loaded and he heard the song on the radio on the drive back to the hotel. He was like, "Wow what a great rock song!" He came back and said, "Guys I want us to do a cover of this rock song, it's in Spanish." We looked at each other and said, "What?!" He played it for us and we tried it and we think that it turned out really, really good. We shot a video for it and we're going to use it as a tool to open some doors in Latin America and Spanish speaking countries that have been hard for us to tour in the past.

Sleaze Roxx: Phil's Spanish is pretty good, it's so good in fact that it could open the door for an L.A. Guns album where you re-cut the classics in Spanish.

Steve Riley: I know what you mean because the possibilities are endless, aren't they? We will see what happens when Cleopatra sends out the single and video to Spain and Portugal.
-------------------------------

For those who haven't read the interview, it is an interesting take on his role in the band. I guess I preferred him as just the replacement drummer in WASP.

What the hell. I listened to (and watched) it again and I LIKE IT!

p.s. I've got a fair number of Spanish, Brazilian and Japanese bands' CDs from the 80's an Early 90's that are, not only highly sought after on the collector's market, but are sung in their native tongue and are frickin' amazing.

Sorry Boys... Just don't hear what you are hearing. Kudos to LA Guns to be adventurous and fresh. Boy you try and do one non-English song and you just get labeled as "you suck" ? Where's the love ?

Some tunes get catchier and you "get it" with more listens. They got me interested in the new album for sure

GNR! I'm with ya and living proof that if you listen (and watch) again, you just might be surprised how your initial reaction may have been wrong.

The song's great and it's so cool they took the risk to do it. I've totally changed my mind about this band. Though I love Tracii's guitar playing, here's Phil asserting himself as a true visionary, demonstrating his commitment to making his version a legit band with the other members right along with him, by putting out a real album with a legendary producer who is the perfect choice when you consider his pedigree.

Bah-da-da-da, bah-da-da-da...!!! Killer!

Can't wait to hear the rest of it.

p.s. I wish these guys would play The Monsters of Rock Cruise. They are much needed. Plus -- Love this video! Killariously Retro-camp!
