'Houston Press' Picks Worst Metal Bands Of The 80s

Everyone has an opinion, which is fine. I certainly have my opinions and I spout them freely. This is the reason I don't feel bad in saying that the Houston Press fails big time when it comes to talking about 80s metal bands. Yesterday, the Houston Press blog released their list of "The Worst Metal Bands of the 80s." Basically, the list is a giant joke of mega-selling bands that people in all corners of the earth love, so yeah. Here's the list:

10. Tesla
09. Def Leppard (this is the most ridiculous band to make the list in my opinion.)
08. Twisted Sister
07. W.A.S.P.
06. Anthrax
05. Poison
04. Warrant
03. Stryper
02. Nitro (okay, I'll maybe give the author this band. Maybe.)
01. Winger (the most musically talented group on the list!)

Seriously. This is the list of the worst bands of the 80s? Give me a break. I'll never understand why people (er, "writers") that proclaim to love music just turn around and tear down bands for "fun." Whatever. Oh, and it further irks me that the original post is just peppered with insults and profanity. Writers lean on insults when they don't understand their subject matter and they want to appear tough. If the Houston Press wanted an actual post with real information regarding bad bands from the 80s, they could have contacted a real music writer that is an expert on the subject. Trust me, there's zillions of us out there. When I'm given an assignment on a subject I don't know much about, I research, research, research. And then you do some interviews with people that do know the subject matter before you write your piece. This is journalism 101.

Now it's your turn. What do you think of this list of the worst bands of the 80s?

Reader Comments (40)

I'm a big fan of:
Def Leppard

I'm somewhat a fan of:
Twisted Sister

I'm not a fan of:
(But I would never say they are one of the top 10 worst bands of the 1980's)

BUT I a 100% agree with Nitro & maybe Winger(Though I do love the song "Seventeen")
BUT I'm sure I could easily find 9 other bands that are not as good as Winger.

My comments about how sh*te, uneducated and idiotically stupid these lists can be are contained herein below...

In the meantime...

drum roll, please...

My lists...

The Top 10 Greatest 80's Mainstream Hair Metal Bands:

1) Motley Crue
3) Cinderella
4) Poison
5) Britny Fox
6) KIX
7) Dokken
8) Wildside
9) Pretty Boy Floyd
10) Junkyard

The Top 10 Greatest Indie 80's Hair Metal Bands (you've probably never never heard of):

1) Cobra Dane
2) RAM
3) Friction
4) ELI
5) K.K. Wilde
6) Kidd Wikkid
7) White Eagle
8) Marshall Law
9) Ana Black
10) Heaven's Wish

p.s. The Houston Press is right about 2 or 3 of the bands on their list Al posted but I've kinda been converted on one of 'em... Anthrax is THE worst band ever, in Rock and anywhere else ya wanna compare 'em. Tesla is another that is absolute mediocre sh*te, though I do like the singer ever since I saw him just destroy "Highway To Hell" on The Monsters of Rock Cruise. Lastly, Winger really does have some horsesh*te mediocre songs and cheesy videos where Kippy comes off like an arrogant jacka*s. But ever since I saw him play at M3 a couple years back, I've changed my tune a little -- I mean the Wingjob and his band really kick*d a*s.

While a fan of Reb's talent, I really didn't care for Winger until I saw Kip open up for Whitesnake, with nothing but a 12 string acoustic and himself with a sold out audience who half probably didn't even know who he was, THATS when he earned all and any of my respect as an artist. I always thought it would of been kick ass if Reb (Who was with Whitesnake at the time) would of came out at the end and did a couple of acoustic numbers with Kip, now that would of been pretty dam cool!!! As far as the rest of the list it's apparent whomever wrote this has no concept or respect for music, come on Tesla?? Def Leppard?? Really??
October 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDarktown
WOW!!!! Just plain stupid! Tesla is 1 of the best bands to come out of the 80's. Every album is pure poetry. Well its true what the say opinions are like A*SHOLES, EVERYONE HAS ONE. CRAZY though how BIG some peoples are.

I would like to see this guy's top 10 list for best Metal acts of the 80"s. He must be on glue.

I don't listen to Anthrax, Wasp or Stryper but everyone else on that list kicks a**.
October 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRita
Ooops. I don't listen to Nitro either (didn't even know who they were until a couple of months ago. Not vouching for their music.
October 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRita
the fact that tesla is on their just makes it all un-credible. They are such a talented band.

Clearly, Corey Deiterman is not only uninformed about music, but also has no clue about how the real world works. It's very easy to criticize Warrant for recording "Cherry Pie" and Def Leppard for adopting a more commercial sound when you're not trying to make a living as a musician yourself. Sadly Corey, in the real world, at some point, most people have to compromise their principles within their career if they want to keep food on the table. Corey, one day, the Houston Press is going to ask you to write a piece that you don't want to write. If you write that piece because you want to keep your job, that, my friend is your own personal "Cherry Pie."

Besides stryper antrax and nitro, I loved all these bands. Not only did I like them, they are really good. Winger is very talented and Tesla is over the top good. my oh my...what was this paper thinking?

Kix ? Really ? I love those guys. best/worst lists are always subjective, and therefore a waste of time.
October 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChristian
Yes, it's all subjective but by no means a waste of time. I would love to know what you and everybody else here would put on your top ten list. I'm not trying to diss anybody on here personally. I'm just trying to have fun talking about glam metal. I'm assuming that is why everybody comes here to talk about the music we love. I love how everybody has their own favorites. It keeps thing interesting.

Plus you can discover new bands from that era that you may never had heard of otherwise.
October 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJakki Steal
Yeah, Christian...

Let's see your lists.

Or are you afraid to face the WRATH (or surprising kudos) of your fellow BBG!ers.

Also, let me reiterate, unquestioningly, Anthrax AND Tesla s*ck! Aside from Anthrax's Joe Jackson, Cheap Trick and Sabbath covers and a handful of Tesla's songs, both of those bands are absolute SHITE!!!

Also, NITRO are frickin' AWESOME except that the lead singer, Jim Gillete, wound up mistreating his wife of many years, Lita Ford.

Stryper and WASP also kick MAJOR a*s. So do ALL the bands on Jakki Steele's "WORST" list. And same with Hanoi Rocks and Def Leppard. Phenomenol!
October 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMetalboy!
Oddly, I always dug Nitro.
October 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBrian C.
@Metalboy... You're an absolute joke if you think Tesla sucks! Listen to more than Love Song... Stir It Up, Shine Away, and Lady Luck kick ass!
October 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJohn
To each his/her own, but the Killer Dwarfs would NEVER make my list of worst bands, let alone take the top spot. Dirty Weapons (the full album) alone would keep them off that list.

I do agree with several of the others (Britny Fox, Bang Tango, Tora Tora). D'molls is a toss up for me. Most of their albums are garbage, but there are a couple of great songs on each one...
October 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBrian C.
First off, Britny Fox are frickin' HUGE! ALL of their albums kicka*s and they are 110% BADA*S!!! Just check out "Long Way To Love" (ALL the way through). THAT is epic BADA*S! Also, all was not lost when Dizzy Dean left. They got another KILLER singer for vocal duties on the "Bight Down Hard" album with Vegas native and 110% BAD*SS, Tommy Paris (aka Don Jillson), originally lead singer of a great late 80's indie band, Jillson -- check out the title track, "Deadly Girl" from their sole release on YouTube and you'll hear why that trades for $1000+. Back to Britny -- Listen to "Six Guns Loaded" off "Bite Down Hard" and for double extra BADA*SEDNESS, that's hired gunslinger, ZAKK WILDE, on geetar (a total shredathon!)!!!

Next, Tesla does indeed suck as they are just so boring and take themselves way too seriously! Okay here's a handful of Tesla songs I find halfway decent:

1) Hang Tough
2) EZ Come EZ Go
3) Modern Day Cowboy
4) Rock Me To The Top
5) Heaven's Trail (No Way Out)

I own all their sh*te and seen 'em twice, coulda seen 'em 5 times but quite after the second as I saw the truth, so believe me I know what I'm talking about... They're sh*te, Johnny Boy.

Killer Dwarfs are frickin', well, Killer, har-har, the song, "Dirty Weapons" their masterpiece alone TOWERS over anything Tesla ever overproduced. So, I don't agree with you totally, Bri, I do agree with you on Killer Dwarfs AND NITRO!

p.s. Scroll up to my list, check the bands on YouTube and most of you will hear REAL Rock'n'Roll for the first time.

Mediocre bands multiplied at the end of the 80's I can't say they were awful bands, some of them were great musicians, but the record companies pushed the "hair metal-power ballad" formula to the limit and doomed them..I remember Steelheart, Tangier, Slik Toxik, Hericane Alice, Cats in Boots, Shotgun Messiah, Mcqueen Street, XYZ, Trixter, Firehouse and many more..if Houston Press is looking for the worst bands, there are millions during the grunge-altenative 90's!
October 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRick
Ugh! Trixter would be one! How could I forget, Rick! Alright, I hear a new list a comin' of the truly horrible. Here's five to start:

1) Trixter
2) Ugly Kid Joe
3) Extreme
4) Tesla
5) Mr. Big

Hahaha!!! Hey at least I didn't put the UNROCKERS, Teslugh, until 4th, hahaha!!!

Really ha in' fun with you neophytes on here with this topic. C'mon, Christian! Where's your lists, both good and bad. The batsh*t crazy are waitin' in the wings for ya (including me), hahaha!!!

Forgot a few other awesome bands that had major record deals but couldn't make it last: Roxx Gang, Beau Nasty, Vain, Roughhouse, Cold Sweat, Melidian, Shotgun Messiah, Love/Hate, Dirty Looks, LeMans, D.A.D., Julliet, Kingdom Come, TUFF, Dangerous Toys, Heaven's Edge, Four Horsemen, Johnny Crash, Rock City Angels (RIP, Bobby), Zodiac Mindwarp & The Love Reaction, Kick Axe, Electric Angels, Life, Sex & Death, Saints & Sinners, Dirty Blonde, Dirty Rhythm, Sea Hags and Salty Dog, among others... Please add...
