Killer Whitford/St. Holmes Video

Since I'm a hardcore Aerosmith fan, I've known about Whitford/St. Holmes for years. I had a tape of their tunes when I was a kid and I played it a lot. Now Whitford/St. Holmes are back in action and releasing a new album next month. Just yesterday they released the song "Shapes" on iTunes. Of course, this sent me straight to YouTube to look up some live clips.

When it comes to live guitar, I put Brad Whitford at the top of the pack. He's amazing and criminally underrated. He's consistently out-shined by Joe Perry. While Joe just looks like a rockstar, I've always felt Brad has more raw talent and technical skill when it comes to the guitar. Now that said, Aerosmith is famous because of the guitar duo of Perry and Whitford. Together, they make amazing songs. But I digress.

The live clip below is pretty killer. And a reminder for those who don't remember: Derek St. Holmes sang for Ted Nugent for a longtime, including on the track "Stranglehold." The man has pipes.

Ally, you have a very discerning ear for guitarists lady! Joe Perry was self taught, while Brad attended the Berklee School of Music, which indeed puts him way over Joes head in the technical aspects of guitar playing. Joe has him in the riff/songwriting department, although Brad is responsible for one of my all time favorite Aerosmith tunes,"Nobody's Fault", (along with "Last Child","Kings And Queens",and quite a few others). As for Derek St. Holmes, anybody else find it coincidental that when Mr. Ego kicked him out of the band,Mr. Ego's album sales and radio play went right along with him? Yeah, me neither...

Gary, you are so right regarding St. Holmes. the man not only has phenomenal pipes, but he is also a very good guitarist and song writer. Even when st. Holmes isn't in Nugent's band, Nugent still introduces "Hey Baby" as "The derek st. Holmes classic." In the early days of that Ted Nugent band, "Stranglehold" was actually a live vehicle for both of them to take extended solos. As Nugent's ego got bigger, he gave St. Holmes less and less opportunities to show off his own guitar skills. I can't wait to hear the new music these two very talented gentlemen have come up with!
