One year, the free concert was The Georgia Satellites (Keep you hands to yourself for hippy hippy shake). In between the Morning Zoo program and the concert, we spotted Pierre Robert on the boardwalk signing autographs. Being the 16yo stoners that we were, we went over to him and instead of asking for an autograph, we asked him if he wanted to get high. He said sure. If our parents knew...they'd kill us! Actually, they'd probably take away our cars, instead.
We went "under the boardwalk" and smoked a joint with this legend asking him about bands and the radio scene- I was interested in asking about Van Halen and Howard Stern, but my buddy was a Dead Head; who, during his Junior year, was kicked out of the Catholic high school that we attended together. He just couldn't comply with the strict dress code, I suppose.
I'm still friends with him to this day and we're going to the Tom Keifer show at the Keswick in a few months. Whenever we get together these days, we reminisce about the time we toked with Pierre and all the other crazy sh*t we used to do. Interestingly enough, he has hung out with Pierre Robert dozens of times throughout the years. Me? Only that once. Don't worry, despite our past, he has become a very successful businessman with a beautiful wife, wonderful children, a gorgeous home and, of course, with the requisite beach house still.
In the "7 degrees of separation" category, when I moved up to the Lehigh Valley and started working for CPS services, I worked with a woman who, years earlier, worked for WZZO. She even was an on-air personality overnights. But to add credibility to Howard's rants of how badly radio management treats it's staff...her "salary" was $6.50/hour. Capitalism at it's finest considering how much that station rakes in. She did, however, show me some cool pics of her hanging with Van Hagar and in 1987, she also hosted a young and upcoming band at Allentown's former Zodiac club named Guns 'n Roses. She said there were about 20 people there. To put this in perspective, while in college, I went to the Zodiac club in 1991 just for a "Use Your Illusion" listening party and the place was packed.
