bk: The DJ in the video above is Pierre Robert (pronounced Ro Bare) on Philadelphia rock station 93.3 WMMR; the same radio station as John DeBella who was Howard Stern's Rival back in the 80's. He still broadcasts on that station, but Debella is long gone. I write this because (what the hell), I had a friend whose parents had a beach house in Brigantine, NJ (next to Atlantic City). Every year, The Morning Zoo, used to broadcast for a week on the Beach of Atlantic City. I used to visit my buddy (who hated Howard- still does) at his waterfront beach house during that week and we'd venture over to Atlantic City's beach/boardwalk to watch the Morning Zoo show. They used to have free concerts on the beach after the broadcast.

One year, the free concert was The Georgia Satellites (Keep you hands to yourself for hippy hippy shake). In between the Morning Zoo program and the concert, we spotted Pierre Robert on the boardwalk signing autographs. Being the 16yo stoners that we were, we went over to him and instead of asking for an autograph, we asked him if he wanted to get high. He said sure. If our parents knew...they'd kill us! Actually, they'd probably take away our cars, instead.

We went "under the boardwalk" and smoked a joint with this legend asking him about bands and the radio scene- I was interested in asking about Van Halen and Howard Stern, but my buddy was a Dead Head; who, during his Junior year, was kicked out of the Catholic high school that we attended together. He just couldn't comply with the strict dress code, I suppose.

I'm still friends with him to this day and we're going to the Tom Keifer show at the Keswick in a few months. Whenever we get together these days, we reminisce about the time we toked with Pierre and all the other crazy sh*t we used to do. Interestingly enough, he has hung out with Pierre Robert dozens of times throughout the years. Me? Only that once. Don't worry, despite our past, he has become a very successful businessman with a beautiful wife, wonderful children, a gorgeous home and, of course, with the requisite beach house still.

Thanks Gary. It's sad that "the Bearman" unexpectedly passed away a few weeks ago. For those who don't live in this area, the Lehigh Valley rock station is 95.1 WZZO. They had a staple Morning Zoo show for years called, "The Bearman and Keith". I read the Keith is now going to broadcast solo in afternoon drive time and some syndicated show has been hired for mornings.

In the "7 degrees of separation" category, when I moved up to the Lehigh Valley and started working for CPS services, I worked with a woman who, years earlier, worked for WZZO. She even was an on-air personality overnights. But to add credibility to Howard's rants of how badly radio management treats it's staff...her "salary" was $6.50/hour. Capitalism at it's finest considering how much that station rakes in. She did, however, show me some cool pics of her hanging with Van Hagar and in 1987, she also hosted a young and upcoming band at Allentown's former Zodiac club named Guns 'n Roses. She said there were about 20 people there. To put this in perspective, while in college, I went to the Zodiac club in 1991 just for a "Use Your Illusion" listening party and the place was packed.

Wow! Just saw these stories now. Fletch, I'm so jealous that you smoked weed with Pierre Robert. He is a true legend. I know that area was huge, but sometimes I wonder if, back in the day, if I ever ran into you or Gary in passing. We certainly ran in the same circles around the same time, and enjoyed the same exploits. Anyway, I think that if you spend your teenage years being squeaky clean, and doing everything adults tell you to do, you're doing those years wrong. there is plenty of time to toe the line when you're an adult. I drank way too much, and partied way too hard as a teenager, and still turned out to be a successful adult with a good job and an awesome wife. I still smoke weed just about every day, and enjoy a few drinks on weekends. You can do those things and still be a productive member of society. Anyway, thanks for taking me back down memory lane with MMR and ZZO. I can't wait for Hawaiian Shirt Gonzo Friday, and Oh Yeah Friday!
