Liquid… Metal?

Of course I know Nightwish is symphonic metal but I still wasn’t prepared to hear their version of “Phantom of the Opera” on SiriusXM Liquid Metal of all places.

I was doing errands yesterday and the song came on as part of the Corridor of Covers and I did a double-take when I noticed Andrew Lloyd Weber on the display screen. Definitely a mind-bending moment for sure. The cover is from the Nightwish album Century Child and features the classic lineup with Tarja Turunen on vocals.

The musical Phantom of the Opera debuted in 1986. I have never seen the production. I am not much of a musical fan, although I enjoyed Rent when I saw it live.

Of course, Turunen is known for her commanding live vocal performances - as a solo artist she has released fully classical albums. But still. It’s definitely odd hearing Broadway on Liquid Metal.
