Totally Weird Motorhead Cover

I heard a very weird cover of Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades” on the way home from pilates tonight. I was listening to Liquid Metal as one does and a cover of the classic track came on - done by a female Swedish group known as Drain STH.

The pace of the song was incredibly jarring to me. It is kind of like a grunge version of Motorhead.

First off, this is an obscure band, so props to SiriusXM for mixing it up a little. Second, Drain STH released the cover back in 1998 I believe.

This made things even more baffling to me. I graduated high school in ‘98 and music was my life. Everyone knew this too. Had a band question? Ask Allyson. There was a cool music store in my town that got all the great metal and rock releases of the day and I was in there on the regular, just looking at new arrivals and listening to whatever the store owner decided to feature on any given day. All this is to say I had never heard of Drain STH until I looked up the “Ace of Spades” cover when I got home.

The band wasn’t around very long and broke up in 2000. Singer Maria Sjöholm married Tony Iommi (!) in 2005. They met because Tony was working on music for Drain STH.

Anyway, have a listen for yourself below. Or hell, maybe you love this cover and have it on regular rotation.
