Black Veil Brides, 'Unholy'

My girl Kari turned me on to this song. Black Veil Brides covered the KISS classic "Unholy." The song features Zakk Wylde, too. The song is basically awesome and is featured on the new EP Rebels. True Glam people. Watch.

I've never heard this band before. I know Ally and others swear by them. Not a good first impression for me. Very generic paint by numbers cover. Unfortunately so many people have copied Zakk's squeals that hey are no longer unique. Sounds like the singer is trying to do a Gene imitation as opposed to singing his own style.

Nobody's stealin' from Zakk Wylde! Next time read the post! He's on the dang record!

It's not quite as good as the original but it still ROCKS a plenty.

I happen to like their cover of "Rebel Yell" much better. And believe it or not, I actually like it better than the original despite the fact that I'm a big Billy Idol fan, though more for his Generation X stuff.

I happen to like Black Veil Brides despite their penchant for the screamo schtick at one point in nearly every, if not all, of their songs. It really is annoying but I guess it's some kind of call to arms for Today's Metal Kidz.

p.s. I bought this E.P. yesterday on iTunes. You gotta hand it to them. They show you the week's latest Metal releases based on your musical taste you set by your preferences and previous purchases.

this is my daughters favorite band...she is a freshman...and I have created a little rocker girl.
I really like this band, for they really bring it.
The cover songs are very well done and for Zak to jump on board, says a lot. Keep the rock alive..even if there is a little screamo in there. I hated it at first, but it is growing on me.
I'll still take my Ratt or Cinderella first any day.

I agree with Scott, they did nothing with Unholy to make it their own, it sounds like a poor demo that pales in comparison to the original version.

Say what you want about the cover but I think a "new" band covering UNHOLY is GLAMCREDIBLE!!!! Of all songs for them to cover, ya know? And they pick something off of Revenge.

Scott's post didn't say that someone is copying Zakk's style on this record. His point is, and I agree with him, that Zakk basically plays that same squealing solo way too often. couple that with the fact that many people have copied his style and you have a situation where, even though it is Zakk playing on the record, the solo sounds like it's been done a million times already. a little reading comprehension goes a long way Metalboy. :)

As for the cover itself, I guess it's okay. I give them credit for picking that song, but I'm not impressed with how they covered it. BVB is a band that I just don't understand the hype about.

This is a great song and a great band. I agree it's a basic cover, nothing new, but a terrific song that, let's face it, most of their market will think is theirs.

I guess the EP is iTunes only ? Shame, I don't pay money for files.

If anybody cares, when ya get right down to it Zack ripped off the pinch harmonics (the "squeals") from Randy Rhoades (and Eddie Van Halen),whom I'm sure lifted them from someone else.

I also think BVB did a pretty cool job on this.

People actually listen to these clowns?

it looks like a gang of nikki sixx's. i like these guys.better than most new bands out there.

Hahaha!!! Bobby Boy! Can't read or write, but I can ROCK, and this Sixx pack (noticed the same thing, Bumble) sure as h*ll duz even better than I ever will.

Yet another band of punx to carry the torch for us,

p.s. My sentiments, exactly, Kari, as you more than well know, wink, wink! Kenny O, I don't really listen to 'em but I listen to this and "Rebel Yell", which I think is better, like I said, in my Nu Metal mix. I hear you guyz -- "Unholy" is fairly straight up, but it's just freshened up enuff for me to listen to the song again. Often what occurs for me with many of the originals is that I fried 'em out so bad, back in the day, I can barely listen to 'em now. When new bands tweak 'em up with nice covers, I can listen to the songs all over again. They breath new life into songs I took for dead a long time ago. "Unholy", for example -- one of my fave Kiss songs -- when I got the "Revenge" album, I played "Unholy" over and over for like a week, jumpin' up and down in my apartment in NYC, doin' my solitaire air guitar thing until I killed it. These guyz re-animated the tune for me. Check out "Rebel Yell", too!

p.s.s.t. Nice, Christian! Forget the band tryin' to earn a living. I love ya, kid, but is that really a fair way to operate? Metal and music in general is under siege and one of the big reasons is a mindset like that. If you like it and you want to listen to it but the only way you can own it is on iTunes, why can't you do the right thing? Is it the whole "Apple is the Evil Empire" thing or maybe it's cheaper? The answer is easy -- support the bands if ya like their music!

*face SLAP* C'mon, Kenny O! -- Black Veil Brides are frickin' awesome compared to most of the other clowns out there now!
December 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMetalboy!
yeah i dig this band. not my favorite by any means, but compared to what is coming out now, it's nice to hear some good rock n roll.

Metalboy my good sir, I won't speak for christian, but I'll tell you why I personally won't buy something that you can only get through ITunes. Unlike every other digital music store, you can't just go to the ITunes store through a web browser and buy your digital albums. If you want to buy something from ITunes, you are forced to install the gigantic piece of bloatware that is the ITunes program. this program, at least the Windows version anyway, installs all kinds of unnecessary crap that slows down your system. No matter how much I love a band, I don't love them so much that I'd deliberately screw up my computer to own their music. If ITunes ever opens up its catalog to be purchased through a standard web interface like every other service on the planet, I'll be there, but until that happens, I'm out.

great song, horrible cover - anemic compared to the original, and the singer makes it even worse.
December 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJack
Metalboy, there are 100 new bands out there better than these guys. I really WANTED to like these guys and this cover. But its ALL terrible. They do NOT get a free pass just because they look like NIkki Sixx clones.
December 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKenny Ozz
a terrible cover of a great song. The weak vocals are bad karaoke version of Genes. I guess it's better that little kids listen to this than pop music.

I bought into the whole "Apple Conspiracy" a long time ago. Believe me, it's so much better than the "Windows Conspiracy", which is mass brainwashing every idiot out here that cheaper is better. Remember, Windows and all those Sh*t computers out here are knock-offs of Apple.

The real question is, "Do you want to live a knock-off life?"

Bobby Baby, need ya to go out to the Apple Store and buy yourself a REAL computer for the Holidays and crank up the iTunes. You'll thank me as soon as you do.

Or... You can always tell me to "F*CK OFF!", hahaha!!!

I'm sure it wouldn't be the first time!
