#RIP Motley Crue

Motley Crue officially announced their final tour yesterday in Los Angeles. As rumored, Alice Cooper will open and Dodge is the presenting sponsor. Despite the fact that I knew the announcement was coming, I was still a little upset. The end of Motley on the road is definitely closing a chapter on Sunset Strip Glam.

I plan on attending the July 6 show at Riverbend in Cincinnati. Even though I felt a little hollow inside after watching the live press conference, I couldn't help but look forward to summer and concert season. I must admit that I couldn't shake my bummed feeling for hours... it honestly hung around until I literally ran it off at the gym.

The guys in Motley were their normal, flippant selves during the presser. They didn't seem sad, or particularly concerned with the tour at all. After all, touring is a job, and a hard one at that. After more than three decades, I can understand why they want to go out on top. Tickets go on sale today for fan club members. General on-sale is Friday (but Saturday for some shows). Go to Live Nation's website to check out the full routing and ticket on-sale info.  Here's the press release that was emailed out after the live event yesterday:

Los Angeles, CA (January 28, 2014) – After more than three decades together, iconic rock ‘n roll band MÖTLEY CRÜE announced today their Final Tour and the band’s ultimate retirement. The announcement was solidified when the band signed a formal Cessation Of Touring Agreement, effective at the end of 2015, in front of global media in Los Angeles today. Celebrating the announcement of this Final Tour, the band will perform on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live TONIGHT and will appear on CBS This Morning TOMORROW MORNING.

With over 80 million albums sold, MÖTLEY CRÜE has sold out countless tours across the globe and spawned more than 2,500 MÖTLEY CRÜE branded items sold in over 30 countries. MÖTLEY CRÜE has proven they know how to make a lasting impression and this tour will be no different; Fans can expect to hear the catalogue of their chart- topping hits and look forward to mind-blowing, unparalleled live production. “When it comes to putting together a new show we always push the envelope and that’s part of Motley Crue’s legacy,” explains Nikki Sixx (bass). “As far as letting on to what we’re doing, that would be like finding out what you’re getting for Christmas before you open the presents. We think in an age of too much information, we’d like to keep some surprises close to our chest until we launch the Final Tour.” The Final Tour presented by Dodge and produced by Live Nation will kick off in North America on July 2nd in Grand Rapids, MI and reach 72 markets before hitting international territories in 2015. To Live Nation MÖTLEY CRÜE tours are not only box office successes but artistically their shows have set the bar for production and entertainment value. “There’s no arguing that Motley Crue have been and always will be the definitive bad boys of rock and roll,” says Rick Franks, Live Nation’s Regional President of North America Concerts. “But behind all those notorious stories is a legendary rock band that has revolutionized heavy metal and created some of the biggest hits in music history. They are a hugely successful global brand and a touring powerhouse. Everyone at Live Nation has a tremendous amount of respect for these hard working and extremely talented gentlemen. The music industry will never have another Motley Crue.”

The Dodge brothers were a notorious duo, so it seemed only natural to partner with the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band. “Whenever I talk to people about Motley Crue, the common thread is how cool and relevant the band remains even after 33 years,” said Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO, Dodge Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “This irreverent ‘staying power’ resonates deeply with the Dodge brand as we turn the corner on our 100 year anniversary. What better way to celebrate the band’s final tour and the 25th anniversary of Kickstart My Heart than to do it together?”

Fans can look forward to Very Special Guest ALICE COOPER joining MÖTLEY CRÜE for an incredible package – Alice invented the genre and MÖTLEY CRÜE put steroids in it! “Real hard rock bands are hard to find these days,” said Alice, continuing,”Motley has always gone on stage with one attitude and that’s to blow the audience away. That’s exactly how we do it. Putting Motley Crue and Alice Cooper together is going to be just what this summer really NEEDS. We’re going to go out there and tear it up, and I can’t wait to see Motley on stage. Motley Crue and Alice Cooper – A match made in… Armageddon?” As documented in the Cessation Of Touring Agreement the band signed at the press conference today, the band will not tour after this Final Tour. Band Attorney, Doug Mark of Mark Music & Media Law, explains “Other bands have split up over rancor or the inability of people to get along, but this is a mutual among all four original members and peaceful decision to move on to other endeavors and to confirm it with a binding agreement.” Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, and Mick Mars will go their separate ways after the lengthy 2-year touring cycle. Tommy Lee (drums) explains “Everything must come to an end!! We always had a vision of going out with a big fucking bang and not playing county fairs and clubs with 1 or 2 original band members! Our job here is done!!!” Of the band’s tumultuous history, Mick Mars (guitar) adds “(It has been) more drama than ‘General Hospital’ it keeps ‘em watchin’ and they keep comin’ back.” Vocalist, Vince Neil says of the Finality of the tour – “I’ll miss playing with the guys but I won’t quit playing rock and roll!! I feel there are a lot of great opportunities and exciting projects after Motley.

The Final Tour will coincide with the film made from MÖTLEY CRÜE’s NY Times Best-Selling book The Dirt. Jeff Tremaine (Bad Grandpa) has signed on to direct the opus that is set to debut in theaters globally in 2015, coinciding with The Final Tour. The Dirt is not only one of the best selling rock books of all time but also one of the greatest rock books of all time because of its brutal honesty, its unique voice, its multiple perspectives on the same events and its first-person inclusion of all members of the same band. Most rock memoirs are salacious mud-slinging accounts of a single person and MÖTLEY CRÜE was adamant to include the perspectives of all four of its members. Tremaine’s intention is to make, not just a great movie about a band, but a great movie about four misfits who, despite themselves and everyone else, band together to overcome the odds and change the history of Rock & Roll. “The Dirt’ is a movie I’ve wanted to make ever since I read the book in 2002,” says Tremaine. “I relate to the story on so many levels; my whole professional career has been about boys behaving badly, so I have a real connection to the material. It’s awesome to be working with the band at such an exciting time in Motley Crue’s history.” The film will be produced by the members of MÖTLEY CRÜE, Rick Yorn, Julie Yorn, Erik Olsen and 10th Street Entertainment.

BIG MACHINE RECORDS, home to Country Superstars such as Taylor Swift and Tim McGraw has teamed up in a joint venture with MÖTLEY RECORDS and ELEVEN SEVEN MUSIC for the summer 2014 release of a Country Music Tribute To MÖTLEY CRÜE. BIG MACHINE founder and CEO, Scott Borchetta, is among the legion of Country Music fans who love MÖTLEY CRÜE. The country tribute album will show off the band’s quality songwriting with these fresh takes on their classic hit songs. Among the artists already confirmed to be featured on the country tribute album is Florida Georgia Line. Borchetta says of the collaboration, “I have been a not-so-secret Crue fan from the beginning. When manager Chris Nilsson called with the idea for a tribute album on Big Machine Records it was an immediate ‘yes’ from me! Our album will highlight just how great the Motley Crue song catalog is. At the end of the day, that’s what will stand the test of time.”

MÖTLEY CRÜE Fan Club members will get the exclusive first crack at tickets and VIP Packages, via a unique code, beginning on Wednesday, January 29th starting at 10am local time. VIP ticket packages will be made available to the general public on Thursday, January 30th at 10am local time. The general public ticket on-sale for most shows is Friday, January 31st. All tickets and packages can be obtained via Ticketmaster.com, LiveNation.com, or via MotleyVIP.com.

Regarding Crue's stunt of signing a "Cessation of Touring" contract, why do I have the feeling, that, when it comes to these guys, contracts are meant to be broken.

And I hope they do break it! Long Live Crüe! \m/\c/ !!!

I can respect what they are doing, but as a die hard fan I would want just one more tour. No matter what they do, they did and do it on their own terms just like always. That is what I love about Motley Crue, it kills me to see coverage of the tour on ABC This Morning or whatever in the hell it was on. Seeing yuppie clean cut news reporters laugh at it and saying "remember the hit song Girls Girls Girls Tom?" it is not a band for those people, it's a band for us true fans. I might rant a little long on this just because the Crue have a place in my life that cannot be replaced. I will make the show for sure because Crue for me have never let me down live. For the first time too, I will be front row. Long live The Crue and long live Rock N Roll. Stoked for Alice being there too, he puts on one amazing show.

Tour announcement press conferences are the worst, so many cringe worthy moments watching that online yesterday. Can't get over the announcement that they are making a Motley Crue country music tribute album.

Well Said Dj!!!!

Right now, I'm sure they all genuinely feel that this is it, but as we've seen many times before from other bands, "retirement" is just a word. When it comes down to it, they are touring musicians and this is what they do. Obviously, a lot will depend on the health of Mick. If he's feeling good 5 years from now and the band is feeling itchy to play, you can bet that they will tour again.

I'll be checking them out in Toronto. It will be the same show I've seen half a dozen times over the past 10 years, and Vince will sing every 2nd word all night, but who cares? It's always fun, and it's the soundtrack of my youth.

That's cool that they finally decided to call it a day.
I I think that the last show ever, should be in Los Angeles. And if so, I'll go to that, bookending there live career, having been there first club show I'd like to be at their last show. They got paid for this a long time ago when they sign be LiveNation deal. This is Josh the completion of that contract.

Damn..."speech to text" sucks... :(

Wow, Ace! Thanks for the inside scoop, as usual! AND it's awesome that you are coming completely full circle when you see their last show ever.

It is sure to be epic!

Wouldn't it be great if they went out with a lot of songs they haven't played in ages or NEVER played live before or EVEN BETTER, played their entire first and BEST album, "Too Fast For Love"?

I will be there in Allentown PA in August, just in case they stick to their word. But deep down, they're attention whores (meant in a good way!) and if/when the solo stuff goes into the tank and they're out of the limelight for a few years,if healthy, they will reunite. Remember, they're saying they won't "tour". So what's to stop them from doing one offs in different cities spread out over a longer period of time.....Long live them,as they were the shit back in the day, whatever the outcome!

Hoping to see them off at the Charlotte show this summer. Did anyone else catch the performance on Jimmy Kimmal last night? It was awful. Hopefully they will step it up for the final tour.

I'm looking forward to the show August 3rd in Kansas City. Snagged eleventh row center stage and get to go with my wife and an old coworker and concert going buddy. Not sure about Dj's comment it is not a band for those people... I'm a pediatric surgeon and probably am considered one of those people, but I've been a Cruel fan since the eighties. Drives some of the people I work with nuts, but I get to choose the tunes.

Crue; stupid phone.

I think it would be amazing if they played deeper cuts. I can only dream but I wanted to see Too Fast For Love and Shout At The Devil both front to back. But I can only dream. Thinking I might make a few of these shows. That would be amazing Ace if you went to the last show ever to do that. If I were you I would try like hell.

Well, hopefully they (read Vince) are better that they were last night on Jimmy Kimmel. Vince was absolutely horrible

Am I the only one who doesn't care if this is the last Crue tour or not? I'm sure I'll go to a show or two because Alice Cooper is on the bill... But I will not pay any hard earned cash to see this tour.

I understand all the "oohs" and also the "mehs." I won't grind previous axes since I promised to start off 2014 in a different key.

That said, let me just make one observation: the juxtaposition of _The Dirt_ (as a book or a movie) and MC today is a bit jarring. Meaning? They were "on top" (no offense Allyson) when "the dirt" was still lower case and seedy and before Sixx created his own "Some Kind of Monster (the Grain of Salt Tales)".

They aren't now. And neither are a host of other bands that we love with a passion. I will use an example from a previous post: VH. Nowhere near the top and never likely to get anywhere close to it again (Hagar or Roth or Cherone or Danzig!). But that doesn't really matter to fans.

To repeat: I am not slagging fans (myself included) or them (music is a business and they have done well by it). The fact is, they aren't even close to DoD-era impact at this point. And, yes, there are a host of contributing factors that go beyond Neil's singing or Sixx's and Lee's side projects or Mars's illness. But some of those are just red herrings (occasionally thrown by the band members themselves).

With their legacy secured long ago, let's hope they keep their promise and go out in a fan-focused way. It just won't be "on top." But it is a heck of a lot higher than I will ever get. And I can appreciate that fact and enjoy them at the same time.

Oh...you're kidding me! Some love them and some hate them??? You can't be serious? I thought everyone loved legendary bands? Lol. I'm guessing most of the hate is coming from younger ppl who hate them because they don't sing about politics or some other boring topic. Or they just hate em because they're an older band. Now that's a great reason to hate a band!
January 30, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbkallday
Hello bkallday. Quick question: where are you picking up the "love" and "hate"/"young" and "old" stuff? From this set of posts or elsewhere?

Quite a bit of media traffic in the wake of their announcement (that bodes well for initial ticket sales). Speaking of which, I was wondering if anyone caught Fallon making a joke about them in the opening monologue tonight. It was a funny, spot-on, and light-hearted jab at the band.

Though I suppose I should be careful throwing the word "funny" around. Touchy subject these days.
