Guns n' Roses Reunion: All Killer, No Filler (Seriously)

Here's a review in three parts. I attended the second night of the big Guns n' Roses reunion in Las Vegas. Attending with me were my husband Eric, Heather (her husband skipped the show but did everything else with us!), Kari, Brian, Christian and Johnnie Vrana. If you've been around BBG! for awhile, then all these names should be familiar to you. I joked that the weekend was my BBG! family reunion. All in all, it was just a great weekend with friends and great music. And it wasn't all about GnR. I also saw Britney Spears - (don't laugh, her residency is amazing) and Sebastian Bach with the Sin City Sinners.

On Thursday night, we all went out to eat and did some gambling. I even met longtime reader EddieLongHair - he and his wife went to the Friday gig. It was great to meet them both!

Heather and I, along with our husbands, saw Britney Friday night. It was all hits. The show started at 9:30 on the dot and went until 11. It was hit after hit and hard core dancing in heels. I loved it. Sure Britney Spears doesn't sing live - but I'm paying for the spectacle and I got it. Highly recommend if you like dance music.

After the show, Eric and I hopped in an Uber and traveled across town to Vamp'd to meet up with Kari to see Sin City Sinners and Sebastian Bach. It was just $10 and that included a drink, so really cheap. It was after 12 by the time I got to the venue and Sin City Sinners had already started. They sounded just okay. The real draw was Bach of course and the place was pretty full. Sebastian came out and did five songs, including a Rose Tattoo cover. He mentioned being excited for Saturday night and Guns n' Roses. I told Kari this meant he was joining the band on the stage for a song. She said I was nuts. Nope. I was right.

Ok, so while I was at dinner and then Britney Spears, Brian and Christian were standing in line for the barrier to the first night of Guns n' Roses. They bought tickets on the resale market for this extra night.

I must admit I was less than pleased when Kari looked at her phone Friday afternoon and announced Axl broke his foot. All of us just sort of stared at each other, waiting for horrible news that the show was canceled or something. Nope - the show went on and Axl was great, even perched on a throne in a cast.

Here's Christian's review:

I travelled from Australia to Las Vegas for three days to see Guns n Roses. On the first night, I was on the floor, on the Slash side, 2 people from the barrier. I had seats the second night. I have previously seen Axl's GnR (I found it boring) and Slash (I loved his solo stuff). Myles Kennedy did a great job, but it was nothing like this. For the first 5 songs I just kept looking from Axl to Slash to Duff, wondering if it was real.

During "Live and Let Die," as it takes off, Axl lets out a scream that blew my mind the first time. He's never sounded better. Duff looked like he was having a ball, and Slash was just Slash, playing great and looking like rock personified. Axl was seated of course, but he was still animated. Some moments, like November Rain, seemed orchestrated to create the money shot of the three men together, but it never looked forced. Richard Fortus still took a few solos and put himself out there, there was no feeling he was made to feel pushed to the back.

I question the need for three dancing girls on stage, that just seemed superfluous. The first night started at midnight, which was murder, but what band gives fans over 2 1/2 hours of show time in 2016? Overall, this was a once in a lifetime experience. Slash and Axl walked off together the first night. On the second, Axl made a dig about Fortus being in the band 15 years, Slash looked angry and they did not walk off together. My suggestion is, get to this before it implodes.

Here's Brian's review:

Having been lucky enough to attend both shows this past weekend, I can honestly say that I feel like I was able to be a part of something truly special.  This crowd was unlike any I have experienced before, because this meant so much to everyone there.  If you had a ticket for the show, it was because you needed to be there when it finally happened.  Tickets simply were not available to the casual fan who just wanted to go see a band that was in town.  Attendees had to sacrifice and work to make it happen.  Plane fare, hotel, ticket costs (including secondary markets), time away from your family…all sacrifices.

I met people from all over the U.S. (Florida, New York, Wisconsin, Texas, New Jersey), and so many others who had travelled further (Australia, Peru, London, Canada, Japan).  It was an effort to be there, but it was also a privilege. The shows themselves where amazing.  A broken foot may have slowed down his movements, but Axl’s voice was dead-on all night.  But beyond that, the feel of the band was so much different than the Chinese Democracy line-up.  There really is something magical when those core three guys play together, and the difference is tangible.  It was clear walking out of the arena on that first night that GnR will once again be a stadium act.

Certainly, everyone there was hoping for some form of an Appetite-era reunion with Izzy and Steven, even if only for a few songs.  That obviously did not happen, but from what I witnessed, NO ONE walked out the arena disappointed with any aspect of the show.  Axl, Slash and Duff accomplished what they needed to this past weekend.  They proved why they are worthy of all the hype and they delivered on the expectations of the fans that have waited 23 years for this to happen.  Long live GnR.

My review:

On Saturday night, we all went. Way back months ago, I was able to grab our tickets during the on-sale. It was some miracle, but I had six devices going. When I got through the virtual waiting room on my iPad, I just bought whatever the computer gave me. Turns out we were in a balcony, Slash's side. The new T-Mobile arena is beautiful but wow are the steps super steep! Literally EVERYONE commented on how steep they were up in the balcony.

The beginning of the show was pretty anti-climatic. After all, there's no grand entrance when you have a broken foot. Stage hands just wheeled Axl out on stage and he said "Good evening" to the crowd and the band went to work. I felt a little sorry for him until I realized he was making millions of bucks for sitting on his throne while also wearing an emerald ring the size of my head.

I was pleased that "Estranged" was so early in the set. "November Rain" was magical for me. My night also got "Don't Cry" which was not included Friday night. Of course we also got Sebastian Bach singing "My Michelle." Kari got so excited she almost passed out! After he sang, Bach went on a little rant about how GnR was back. The crowd loved it.

i agree with Christian that the dancing girls were pointless - it was too much like Motley Crue and after the first half of the set they just basically disappeared anyway. I also don't see the need for extra keyboardist Melissa Reese but that's just me.

The Saturday show started at about 11:30 and went until 2:45 a.m or so. Seeing "Coma" live was something I didn't think would ever happen, but it makes sense to use the longer songs while Axl has to sit. All in all, it was one of the best concerts I've ever attended. I have to agree with Christian though: try to see this show early before it implodes.

Just to add, I can't see Stephen on that stage again, the man is a liability. I'm sure they'd have liked to have Izzy, and I'd have loved to see him, but if he chooses not to take part now, I reckon people will be less upset as time goes on, and it will in some ways lessen his contribution, as it is remembered. Seeing those three felt like that's all the GnR that mattered, or at least, that it was all we needed. Which is a shame.

I'm glad you all had a good time while here in Las Vegas. Sorry about the rain, It's usually bone-dry & beautiful in April. i would have come out Saturday night for a drink & to say hello, but past experience tells me to stay away from the Strip in rainy weather. The drivers here aren't that good! T-Mobile Arena is a brand new thing here & totally ups the size of the largest event arena from MGM Grand's 11,000 to around 20,000 in this place. I'm not sure that's going to be a good thing or a bad thing. I hope you all come back for something fun when there's an event at the Hard Rock's 3000 seat "The Joint". And I hope you all made a little money gambling!

Thanks for the reviews. Sounds like you guys (and gals) had a great time. I actually thought of some of you when I also read that Axl broke his leg- and empathized with your presumed disappointment that the show would be cancelled. And, I do appreciate the forewarning to catch this show before it implodes.

That being said...my buddy posted on facebook that he just ordered tix for the Philly show. I responded that I'l play the "wait and see" game and maybe, just maybe, depending on how it goes, I may get tix and take my son, where we can carpool and tailgate together.

Gotta remember...I am gun-shy about attending since my last three times were:

1) Axl and Co playing the electric factory in Philly. After waiting 3 1/2 hours, I left.
2) Taking my foster son (age 16) to Axl and Co at the Spectrum (or whatever it was called at the time). After Axl had a hissy fit, a riot ensued, and boy, did I get sh*t for that decision.
3) GNR playing the Spectrum, in which I had a job interview the next day at 9am. After waiting 3 hours, they came on at 12:30am, Axl had a fit after two songs and left the stage. I then left, too. Didn't get the job (Not Axl's fault, I just didn't have the experience- but was offered the job a few years later and declined it).

So, I do give multiple chances. It's not "Once bitten, twice shy" for me. But reading all the other shenanigans from other fans all across the world, I am currently in Ace's camp on this issue and, again, can't wait to see Adler at M3!

To All that went congratulations! Glad it was an awesome experience. Good to see Christian made it and great to see him reporting on the show. The magic you describe is real in my opinion I have always felt that way from day one. Brian makes a good point about the crowd and I just can't make the sacrifice this year to attend this event with funds committed to other events previous to the announcement of this tour. I will have to live on my previous three memories of the band with Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones and Blind Melon. Anyway great reviews and good point you never know when it may implode so glad the BBG crew got to see and enjoy it!

Thanks for the reviews. I hope the magic holds out until at least June 29 when I get to see them POINT BLANK! After the reviews, I am especially looking forward to it.

I forgot to add that I hope they keep the dancing girls. You can never go wrong with dancing girls at a rock show.

Ok, just a few quick thoughts -- First, I had a great time at Friday's show! And it was great to meet the BBG gang while we were out there (sorry I had to deliver the 5FDP bad news, Christian!). The energy of the crowd was definitely off the charts. Axl sounded great, albeit from a stationary perch and Slash was awesome. I was particularly impressed with his Chinese Democracy playing. I've seen Slash with Myles Kennedy and really just thought they were a "decent bar band doing GnR covers", but THIS was Guns N Roses! It looked like GNR, sounded like GNR and (for the most part) felt like GNR. Ok, so this is where I'm probably gonna get slammed, but I say "for the most part" because I just didn't really feel the camaraderie between Axl, Slash and Duff. Granted, I wasn't up front like Christian so maybe I was just missing it. I wouldn't go as far as saying they seemed like "hired guns", but maybe they just need a little more time to warm up to each other (or possibly implode as was mentioned earlier). Was it worth it? YUP! Would I do it again? IN A HEARTBEAT! \m/ \m/

oper8n: dancing girls are part of it, for sure. I took my teenage foster sons to Motley around the same time. This is when Tommy Lee had his "titty cam".

F'uck, if the shit didn't hit the fan after that decision.

all calculus, no trigonometry!

I saw the Sin City Sinners a few months back and they put on a fun show, great vibe, cool songs, and a great time. As far as the GNR thing goes, the videos I've seen are really amazing and Axl sounds great again. Never would I have thought that Axl, Duff, and Slash would be together on stage again. I honestly don't see the point in having an extra keyboardist but that's just me. I'm glad you all had fun at the show, and thanks for the review. Maybe I'll go see em in Seattle if it dosent blow up beforehand.

Great reviews everyone. Thank you.

I'm hoping they keep their shit together until at least July 16th lol. Hoping also I'll be able to get decent seats too. Don't care about the price at this point. I just want to be there.

Not sure if I covered this, but I scalped my floor ticket. I watched the tickets from home, they were all over $1200, some were $4000. They dipped a few times, the ones that dipped sold, I missed some at $750 and then as I got on my plane, I got two for $400. So, it always pays to play chicken with the scalpers.

Dancing girls-if I was fifteen, girls writhing about in g-strings would be awesome. As it stands, I didn't think there was anything wrong with it, I just didn't think it added to the show, for me. Maybe they would need more on stage entertainment if I'd seen them every summer for 20 years, but as it stands, no.

Thanks Ally, Christian and Brian for posting your reviews. It's 3 days later and I'M STILL ON GNFNR TIME! Can't wrap my head around the awesomeness that was the show Sat night. Maybe we got Axl's best vocal performance yet b/c he wasn't running around. It was bizarre to see him sitting but his vocals had everyone in the T-Mobile Arena losing their minds with excitement. Just nailed note after note, scream, high, low, and all in between. Just Kickin' A** and Takin' Names!

Here are some of my takeaways:
* LOVED how Slash embraced the Chinese Democracy songs (but wish they'd pull Better from the set, just not a fan)
* Slash's guitar solo during 'This I Love' was just beautiful as was his solo when he played the Love Theme to The Godfather (He's just one of the best there is!)
* I missed Izzy but......Fortus held his own and won me over - really dug his style and how he mixed with the band
* Duff = epitomy of COOL
* Loved how the trinity jammed to the Layla outro at the piano b/f going into Nov. Rain
* Wish we would have heard something off Lies (and I'm not talking Patience) and wish we would have gotten Out to Get Me also. Overall I thought the set was GREAT!
*Baz showing up on stage just put it all over the top for me. For those that love to hate him or what not.....there is no denying the man was meant to be on stage.
* Place just erupted the whole night with energy and excitement and I can hardly wait to get to the stadium level show once Axl is back on his feet. I"m soaking it all up as much as I can in case it all implodes and the train derails (unlikely until after the shows are done b/c there is too much $$$$$$ on the line)

Now back to watching more you tube vids of the show.(haha)
Until next time...

Christian: when I posted about the dancing girls, I was referring to their stage antics back in the day (see Marc Cantor's book) as being a part of their show and not that the strippers make it all worthwhile. That's why I posted about bringing my teenage kids to see the [other] spectacles. They would appreciate it, while I sat there and explained to them that it's about the music, not the stripping.

As I posted before, when tommy lee pulled out his titty cam and my sons got excited and nervous at the same time, my job as their dad was to explain to them that Mr. Lee is not someone who you should emulate. PERIOD!

Thanks to Al and all the Hardcore BBGer's who went to the Vegas shows for making us feel like we were there with your reporting and commentary...

And, barring any unforeseen circumstances, I will be seeing Gn'R for myself, now for the 6th time, point blank in Orlando on July 29th.

I'm also hoping to catch Axl singing for AC/DC if that happens, too!

Appreciate all the details. I am glad everyone had a great time. I could say a lot. But I won't.

Awesome weekend for all of you.

Oh, and true to form, once again, I STRONGLY disagree with CHRISTIAN, surprise, surprise! KEEP the Dancing Girls! Yeah, they don't need 'em but WTF?! Bring 'em on! Huh-uh-lo-oh, we ain't talkin' Zeppelin here!

Y'all can't be surprised that a chic has problems with dancing girls being onstage? Seeing Britny Spears and amazing in the same sentence, is absolutely hilarious!!!
