Vince Neil Plays M3... A Little Rough

M3 went down Friday and Saturday in Columbia, Maryland. I poked around for some videos and came across this jewel of Vince Neil doing "Home Sweet Home" below. It's a little rough, I gotta say. Okay, it's a lot rough. Vince sounds terrible but I think he was trying to do a good job.

Apparently Vince only did something like six or seven songs, so a super short set. He really shouldn't have been too winded. At any rate, he looked like he was having fun.

The best thing about a solo Vince Neil show is the star of the show, Drummer Zoltan Chaney.

The only way it could get better, is if Vince's mic stopped working.

Lmfao Ace!!!!!! Chaney is awesome, isn't he! Freaking guy Plays like a meth head on the first night of a four day ripper. My youngest daughter is there. She's 24 and I believe this is her 4th straight year going with her boyfriend and another couple ( I raised that one right. The older one is a rap devotee who didn't fall for my brainwashing techniques...8-p) I always look forward to asking ear who killed and who took the proverbial gas pipe at the festival in her eyes. Judging by that video,I'm thinking VInny may be falling not the latter of the 2 choices...

It's true about Zoltan Chaney! I still can't figure out why somebody bigger doesn't pick him up. I feel like he's an A-List level drummer playing with B-List acts. Or, he could just form his own band, chroming his last name, ZOLTAN, in great big giant capital letters.

Ace, as far as Neil is concerned, I actually saw him several years ago at M3, the best one by far with Scorpions, Cinderella and KIX headlining. I would say Neil headlined also, but he just didn't come off like a headliner at all, save for Chaney and the rest of the band.

Anyway, the exact scenario you described actually happened. About three songs into his set, he started having mic problems, or so he claimed. It looked like something out of a bad 80's comedy movie, as he was tapping on the mic, trying to sing into it, shaking his head, screaming to a sound guy to his stage left, throwing his mic at the guy, then storming off stage around the back of the stacks where I could see him berating the guy and other people.

Thing is, I was watching the whole charade from a POINT BLANK position, dead center, front row, and I DO mean charade. From that vantage point, I could practically see his dental work (He looks like he's got about $100,000 worth of bad fake grillwork, BTW) and I'm convinced, as in CON-VINCE-d, there was nothing actually wrong with his mic.

In his interactions with the guys off stage I could see one Asian dude who was taking the most heat checking the mic, doing the same sh*t as Neil, tapping it, checking the connections, seeing if it worked and shrugging like there was nothing wrong with the damn thing.

All of this was going on during the customary mini set of covers the band plays, i.e. "Whole Lotta Love", with Jeff Blando, his lead guitarist, on lead vocals, while Neil gets a manicure (or something we don't want to say here). Thing is, it didn't seem like Blando, or the rest of the band, for that matter, was having any difficulty with mics.

So, there was Neil, not only faking he was having technical difficulties with his mic, but also disappearing during half the set to have Blando & Co. (basically, the band Slaughter consisting of said Blando, Chaney and L.A. legend, Dana Strum) doing warmed over, albeit, professionally delivered, if not unremarkable, cover songs.

Then seeing Neil solo again, a couple of years later, I realized THAT is his solo show, sans the mic issues, where he'll dissapear halfway through his set to have the band play three songs, and then come back at the end to sing three more.

It's a way for him to not have to sing a full set of songs. The problem is, you feel jipped, like, "Hey, this isn't what I paid for!", kinda jipped.

Hate to say it, as I am a diehard fan of Motlëy Crüe, but based on crap like this, and much worse when you consider his horrific car accident that killed Razzle, drummer of Hanoi Rocks, I imagine he'll one day be doing a half-assed version of "Shout at the Devil" for Lucifer himself.

Well, that is if he wants to hear it.

What do you expect ? It isn't like he gets any better. I think it's funny that the same old things keep getting said about Vince like something is going to change. And even the old standby of bringing up a tragedy that is what ?!?! 30?? Years old now that is somehow relevant to this post?

Vince is rough. A lot of the singers are. Dokken, Keifer, Pearcy, joe Elliott, etc, etc. but at least he's still touring, wish he would play some solo stuff and b side crude to really be different. But alas, that will never happen.

Indeed, GNR, he should perform the entire "Exposed" album, but he should also make an effort to learn how to sing.

H*ll, Axl Rose has sounded like sh*t, or if you want to sugarcoat it, "rough" for years, yet he can suddenly sing his a*s off again.

Granted, he's personally making in the neighborhood of $1,000,000 a show, but it can't be only about the money. It's gotta be pride, of which it seems like Neil has none.

As far as the accident is concerned, I don't care how many years ago it was, it's gonna eat away at the guy, and worse than usual, if he never experienced real remorse over it.

If he got his sh*t together, made piece with his demons and actually tried to sing again, I might feel differently but like I said in my earlier comments on this post, he's CONVINCEd himself he's legit when we all know what a circus clown he's become!

Yeah, Zoltan's the Shizz-nit when it comes to drummers., and I too, have wondered why a bigger band than either Vince's or Slaughter hasn't picked him off. Next time Kottack goes to rehab or jail (take your pick) maybe the Scorpions with pick him up on waivers...

As for Adler, I was curious as to how his GnR cover band was going to do... I found a video & can see that Axl's higher priced GnR cover band made the right decision to not involve him.

And, GNR... He could sound better. He occasionally lucks out but he could do more... Case in point... AXL... His voice was shot for years and now he sounds better than ever!

When you "go out on top" the only place to go is down. It is sad really. Neil was one of those vocalists who was, by and large, a studio voice (not saying he couldn't do it live on occasion, just sayin') like Pearcy. Others have become, over time, studio voices. DLR is a great example of that. The problem is that he doesn't really bring anything else to the table and has to hide behind a band that is better than him (you choose which one, Crue or solo). He has no stage presence anymore. He doesn't even seem to want to phone it in. Maybe fax it in. When you exist in an edifice of self-adulation, you can convince yourself that you aren't robbing your fans. Funny thing is, some fans want to be robbed; others, choosing a festival, just agree to get their pockets picked because they want to see other bands on the bill.

Axl? He has been hit or miss for years now (luckily, I caught him when he was "on" a few years back). It will be interesting to see how his voice holds up in the upcoming months. Hopping between bands and getting out on the road for long stretches--as opposed to residencies and select dates--has to be tough on any singer.
