Disgust.

Because this is America now apparently. Another mass shooting, this time in Dayton, Ohio - my metro area since I graduated college back in 2001. Yes, I've been to the Oregon District many times. Yes, I've been to Ned Peppers bar. As of 9:00 a.m. ET officials have not released the victim list. Those of us who live here are bracing for the bad news.

It's time to get rid of the guns. Past time, obviously. And by "get rid of the guns," I mean all of them. Every last one of them; handguns, rifles, AK-47s, the whole lot. If it takes repealing the 2nd amendment to get it done, so be it.

Who knows if better gun laws would have prevented these and all the other horrific shootings of innocent people but we still have to try.

Vote out those who refuse to take action to improve our nation’s gun laws and also those who incite division, hatred and violence.

Very sad day and a horrible tragedy . Stricter gun laws may or may not have prevented this, but why not try. Stripping away the 2nd amendment rights of Americans is not the answer and will not happen. Thankfully Law enforcement was quick on the scene or this would have been worse.

Taking away guns only keeps honest people honest - would it prevent the heat of the moment episode from happening - maybe but for calculated - mentally unstable people that are dead set on creating chaos they will find a way to release mayhem on others. Knives (China) Pipe Bombs, and other devices will take center stage if guns are removed.

Unfortunately America was shielded for years and are now experiencing what other countries go through and have had to take security measures to protect their citizens. Visit anywhere in the middle east you will find armed guards on buses, at shopping centers. malls etc...

NO one thinks it will happen to them until it does. These types of actions taken by cowards shake peoples foundations to the core and then people demand accountability and change.

The words security posture and threat assessment are words everyone should understand. Be vigilant, know your surroundings and have some idea of how to protect yourself and evade in the event of one of these situations occur. Decide how you will react - evade or engage.

There is no concrete answer on how to move forward, no one action will make the changes that will prevent this from happening - It takes cultural change on a multi-faceted level along with legislation and being proactive instead of reactive.

Remove guns - I disagree but change the way we think, how we raise our children, and get involved together and we can help each other and maybe prevent this sickness from claiming more lives.

Call me crazy, but I just want to go have a couple of beers. I don't want to spend 15 minutes talking to staff about exits in case some lunatic bursts in with an assault rifle. I don't want to insist on getting a table facing the door in case Jack McCall decides to blow my brains out immediately after I draw aces over eights.

I'm all for other solutions. By all means, let's improve mental health diagnoses and treatment; let's get rid of the hate on 8chan (and Facebook and YouTube) that radicalises the shooters. However, getting rid of the guns is the only guaranteed way to stop the mass slaughter. Sure, other items can be deadly. But no cowardly jackass can kill 58 people and wound 422 more from a room on the 32nd floor of a hotel with a knife.

Thanks to District of Columbia v. Heller, in order to get rid of the guns, the Second Amendment probably has to go. Or at least the wording needs to be changed to reflect that the government keeps the standing army, not the individuals.

We can worry about all the other stuff later. In the United States, right now, at this particular point in history, it's the guns which are causing all the problems.

Over reaction is never a solution. Crazy is crazy - you are not going to stop that. Go for a drive tonight in a nice crowded place and just jerk the wheel left or right... 5 minutes of shame fame right there for anyone that wants it or is not stable enough to know right from wrong.

It's illegal to kill people. Reform and punish that first. Oh but I forgot, criminals have rights to. I doubt they read the 2nd amendment on if they can or cannot find and have a gun.

And yes, you need to start somewhere on curbing access/illegality to have/limit on how many/ etc... But there also has to be STRICT punishment for STRICT laws.

We are slowly, but surely whitnessing right before our eyes, the gradual collapse of the American empire. People in this country, who have full-time jobs, are sleeping in their cars because they can't afford housing.

big cities are being choked to death by homelessness: people breaking into businesses, urinating and defficating in the streets; spreading diseases and accelerating economic decline because consumers won't go near businesses where they might be confronted by a homeless person. many homeless people are just trying to make their way in a country where they really can't get ahead, but there are enough homeless people who have serious mental issues and/or drug adictions which make them quite dangerous, or at least threatening.

In rural areas, people can't find decent paying work because much of the manual labor that would have earned them a decent wage 50 years ago is now done by machines. Without a means of supporting themselves, they become depressed and addicted to opiates. Then, once they're addicted, they can't afford treatment so the downward spiral continues.

This was a problem long before Donald Trump became President, but thanks to his antimedia, antiimmigrant rhetoric, now the racists can come out in full force and join the mass-shooting bonanza as well. Add in the fact that, instead of trying to come up with real, workable solutions, our President would rather go on TV and Twitter, and blame the Democrats and the media for everything; further driving a deeper division between this country's citizens, and ultimately enraging some of them to the point of more gun violence.

Again though, there were plenty of people being gunned down in this country before Trump took office, but he is the one who is in the best position to do something about it now. My fear, (Largely founded I suspect), is that this country is way too far gone to fix itself. We are now the Divided States of America, where the American dream, for a lot of people, is nothing more than a dream, and when some people feel that they are completely out of options, they will snap. And, thanks to this ridiculous cowboy mentality that too many people in this country think still exists, guns are everywhere, and super easy to get; so they simply get their hands on one, or several, and end the lives of a bunch of innocent people.

God bless America.

@Bob You get it and I didn't want to dive into the collapse of America but you are correct. We as a country are on the precipice of implosion.

Media controls the masses, the real truth is hard to find. So much deception, deflection and blame games.

NO easy answer or solution but if we continue down this road the divided states will implode.

One huge problem imho is ppl not being able to be tolerant of other’s opinions(this board is a perfect example of that a lot of times). Immediately everyone wants to refer to them as a troll(or worse) & start mass attacking them. The mob mentality has now unfortunately taken over in our own beloved country. To me, it’s downright sickening.

Swore I wasn't going to weigh in on this.....IMO Money runs this country and the entire planet. It truly is the root of all evil.(with organized religion a close second). You'll never elimate the 2nd amendment, not going to happen.(nor should it) Shawn hit it square on. The only people going to suffer from banning guns are law abiding people.Look at the War On Drugs. Nearing 50 years later and all it did was make dishonest people richer. Bottom line it's supply and demand. If there is a market for something, somebody will fill it. The risk is worth the cost.

Until people realize our so called leaders are in it for nothing but profit, shit will stay the same. I always think of it as a feeding trough, with Republicans on one side and Democrats on the other, both swilling all they can. Problem is we fill that trough with our taxes.Their "thoughts and prayers" warehouse should be empty by now after all the innocent lives lost. But the "zero f@cks given" is a self sustaining entity unto itself apparently.

Sorry for my rant. I will now return you to your regularly scheduled programming (which will most likely be interrupted by the next slaughter of innocent people just at the wrong place at the wrong time)

Jack T. ... I said stricter gun laws, NOT taking anyone’s right to bear arms away as long as they’re of sound mind and body.

We’re talking about what Trump proposed today — the Red Flag Laws, though there should be an outright ban on assault weapons, etc.

I’m more with Gogmagog and GNR on this but do agree with certain elements contained within Gary’s, Shawn’s and Bob’s comments. Gary’s descriptions of the big trough with both Republicans and Democrats feeding from it and the “thoughts and prayers” warehouse hit the nail on the head about what our nation’s politicians are really thinking and feeling.

Trump asked for prayers to go out to Toledo, Ohio, not Dayton, where the domestic terrorist attack actually took place. And on the other side of the trough, Biden called for thoughts and prayers to go out to Michigan, not Ohio.

Could you not have the simple decency to at least look like you care enough about the tragedies by making sure you get the names of the towns right, for Godssakes?!
