News Of The Week Roundup: Week 45, 2021

Another week down, another week of big news.

Another person has died as a result of the Travis Scott - Astroworld concert stampede. The death total stands at nine.

Lawsuits against Travis Scott are mounting.

Britney Spears is officially freed from her abusive conservatorship!

After leveling off for awhile, COVID-19 cases in America are on the rise again. Things are bad in Europe as the region goes through yet another wave. Lockdowns are happening again in many places, including Austria. Gene Simmons has some thoughts:

The situation at the border between Poland and Belarus is a powder-keg. Unreal scenes of immigration and desperate families trapped.

Steve Bannon was indicted by a federal grand jury for contempt of Congress. The charges are from the congressional inquiry into the January 6th insurrection. This one is a big deal and something to watch.

This is horrific - a California fertility clinic mixed up embryos and women carried the wrong babies, gave birth, breastfed them, bonded... and then found out they had the wrong child. Now, one couple is suing the clinic.

Sorry the country - well, world - was ruined by the opioid crisis. Apparently we have to protect our rich overlords. The historic lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson was thrown out by an Oklahoma judge.

Speaker of the House aside, this is the most over-the-top, extravagant, expensive wedding (or event) I think I've ever read about. There is a photo gallery with 100 pictures. I have no idea who any of the people are, including the bride and groom, but good grief! I love fashion, so I was drawn to the story to look at pictures of the clothes people wore. Ivy Getty's gown is pretty impressive but that headpiece is ghastly. No offense to Galliano.

And I leave you with this: 'Squid Game' (Netflix) is one of the best shows I've watched in years. I do not read much fiction anymore, but when I do it is mostly dystopian, so no surprise I really enjoyed this Korean series. Definitely watch - but it is not kid friendly at all.

Brannon probably used that Subpoena to wipe his butt. The same thing thing that Eric Holder Did back in 2012. Nothing happened to him 🤔! Bannon will get life in prison or death by firing Squad!

Both Squid Game and Alice in Borderland are good dystopian shows. Different tones. Different points of contact with the genre. Different points of cultural emphasis (trust me, that's true).

Never watch a show like this over-dubbed. Shame. Shame. When you watch it with subtitles, you still lose some of the cultural inflection points, nuances, and what have you. But it is far better than turning a good (or great) show into some sort of Kung-Fu movie that you watched in the 80s.

Similar cases: 30 Coins, To The Lake, Babylon Berlin, Money Heist, Dark, Narcos.

You don't like 'reading' a show? Don't watch it. Or do. But don't expect to get into its rhythms the same way. And if you hate it because of the over-dubbing, look in the mirror. Seriously (and see below).

My test? A good show is a good show (same with the bad, mind you). If, after ten minutes, you don't realize you are 'reading' the show, then you are good to go (even if, after however many episodes, it lets you down . . . it is a show, after all!).

If there is anything great about streaming, it is this: you can so many cultural takes on your own narratives (romance, horror, scifi, thriller, etc.). Give them the chance they deserve, in their voice, even if you have to fumble through less-than-perfect translations. It is as close to bilingual as many (not all) of us will get. But it is a chance to share this marble with some amazing creators (and, to be fair, some horrible ones . . . but that's the reality with which we all live).

Agreed, Jack. It sorta' spun on its wheels there for a bit. But I thought, unlike so many other powerful shows, it stuck the landing. The finale was very good, all things considered. Have you seen any of the other shows I mentioned?

Oh, and Mr. Editor (whoever that is!): please add "find" to my original post. It helps with the flow of at least one sentence!
