Happy National Metal Day!
Last year, Vh1 Classic declared November 11 as National Metal Day. While Macy's isn't running any special sales on towels to commemorate the event, we can have our own party and rock out to some great jams. Of course, you could always tune in to Vh1 Classic and see what they have cooked up for the day... after all, they did declare the holiday.
That Metal Show will reflect on 11 seasons with "That Metal Special." The special premieres at 8 p.m. - check your local listing. After That Metal Show you can watch Judas Priest at the US Festival in 1983. Then Vh1 Classic will re-air the documentary Iron Maiden: Flight 666 (in which you can see our own Christian right at the barrier in one of the shots).
Personally, I think I'll spend the day listening to a mix of my favorite old and new metal acts. The best part of National Metal Day? No gifts!

So far, I've been listening to ELI's 1990 album, "Push It Hard", one of The Holy Grails of Hair Metal.

I will tune into "That Metal Special" (even though I've seen EVERY episode at least twice). Eddie Chump is one of the finest entertainers and funniest comedians of our time. Why? Because he's also one of the biggest dorks to ever roam the earth! What a frickin' inept Bozo that clown is.
After I recuperate from watching that, I will excitedly watch (AND DVR) "Priest US Festival '83" but skip "Iron Maiden: Flight 666" because I have some paint I need to watch dry instead.

He even ALMOST redeems himself at the end of this show, which is a totally unbelievable, one for the books, Greatest Moments in Metal History. Priceless!
Now let's stoke the embers of my "Metal Memories" and settle down for another fireside chat with Metalboy! ...
When that movie was released has to be one of the high points of my life -- one of he coolest chicks I ever dated (also a dead ringer for model Patty Hansen, Keith Richards' wife, in her glory years) called me up for a date to go see it.
I had no clue what it was about and I think she read about it in the D.C. City Paper and figured I'd be into it. She wasn't really into Hard Rock but was bettin' I'd like it and was always up for a good laugh.
Of course, we laffed our a*ses off and I must have seen it in the theatre in the weeks immediately following as well as half a dozen more times over the years at Film Forum revivals while I lived in NYC! Plus I got it on VHS when it came out plus the Soundtrack CD AND the DVD (Deluxe Edition including the T-Shirt)!
I figure I had probably seen the movie around 80 times by the time I was 35 and "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" is one of THE Greatest Metal Songs of All Time!
Quick Funny Story -- This New Jersey dude I used to work with in NYC took his 17-year-old Nephew to the movie when it came out. the kid watched the movie intently for it's 1 1/2 Hour duration. As they exited the theatre, the kid turned to the guy and said, "How come I never heard of these guys before?"...
... Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!
And though our taste-maker in residence didn't welcome me back after the elections with a 'join us once again' shout out, I am glad to be back nonetheless. I am sure it was just an oversight. Or was it?
At least the song remains the same: a person responsible for returning metal to mainstream television (alongside "Metal Mania"). Funny name change? Check. Reference to his nerdiness? Gotcha. Questioning his bona fides? You got that right. Perhaps I misunderstood where the emphasis (and the irony) was meant to be placed in the declarative "Metalboy!"
. . . like I said, it is good to be back.
