Music Resolutions, Anyone?

Well, here we are again: the last day of the year. As we all say farewell to 2012, I figured I might as well poll the crowd regarding resolutions. I'm not talking about dropping weight or reading more (both are important, of course). Rather, I want to know about your resolutions regarding music.

My resolution is to stop buying physical media. I have nowhere to store CDs anymore. In fact, I'm in the process of ripping my CDs to my Amazon CloudPlayer. After that's done (and it will take forever, I'm sure) I'll be selling the CDs. Going forward, I'll only be buying Mp3 albums. Clutter makes me nervous and I'm trying to adopt a more minimalist lifestyle. I just have too much stuff, and I've been going through a major purge.

So, how about you? Resolve to go to more shows? A big festival? Take up a new instrument?

I already lost weight and read a lot, so.... :P

My resolution is less shows. They typically cost me $1000, so while I am sorry I will miss Black Sabbath in AU as I'll be away ( and will try to catch them in the US ), and would have gone to ROTR if I could have, overall I am not automatically going to a show if it's a band I've seen 10 times before, and instead trying to pick the ones I really want to see.

Call me sentimental but there's no way I'll ever part with my physical collection of vinyl and cd's - too many memories attached as to where and when I bought them and so forth.

You say you are jettisoning all the hard copies of your CDs. Well, I, on the other hand, have got you covered and will be doing the opposite, as I continue to amass one of THE greatest collections of rare 80's/Early 90's Hair Metal in the World, mostly stuff most of you have NEVER heard of but trades in the hundreds, if not thousands.

These are the bands who didn't get signed but are as good or better than most who did. Another factor as to why they didn't get signed is they came along a little late in the game. Their CDs are generally slickly produced but printed in small numbers with pro photography (hahaha!!! -- well, sometimes) and cool logos (mostly) adorning the cover graphics.

I'll never get rid of my physical copies of Aerosmith or Motley Crue. But I've come to realize that my happiest memories of the music are from experiences... being at shows with friends is what I remember the most. Seeing John Corabi do "Hooligan's Holiday" in a tiny bar with 10 other people. Being at the first Rocklahoma with Heather. Seeing Poison and Cinderella years and years ago with my husband before it was considered "cool" to like Glam bands again. I'll still own the music - and buy it legally of course - but I don't really need the tangible CD anymore to remind me why I love the band or songs.

Hey, more power to you. There are many reasons you should "downsize" and with technology the way it is, it's never been safer or easier. So, purge thyself of those pesky little chrome colored discs (though you might think twice about holding onto those GIRL vinyl records).

That's why you've got people like Christian and myself to horde the stuff for when we open The U.S. Library of Metal.

My resolution for music this yr is to continue my research, as I tell my wife, to write a complete Rockology. Not that anyone would buy it, however it would be fun to write. It would span from 1981 to present. Of course, as I explain to my wife again, that it is imperative to attend as many shows as humanly possible. Plus buying and listening is important too. First - Happy New Year to all my friends here at Bring Back Glam. I look forward to another year at this forum!! 2013 - is going to start slow as I have a few health issues to attend to. After that I plan to make music {Home Studio}, Buy Music, and play more as I am now signed to Tier One Talent {Booking Agency} from Albany NY. They really like my idea: 'Roy Coston's Tribute to the Guitar Legend's', playing Ted Nugent, Pat Travers, Michael Schenker, Ace Frehely etc. No one really looks like me delivering the good on stage!! Ah, Brian L.! There you are mate! Bro! You haven't put up your "Best of 2012" list yet! You have always struck me as a Rockologist and you should definitely do that book, Bro! Great title, too!

Plus, I think you might be pleasantly surprised to find you would sell more than you think, especially if your obvious passion for the music comes through.

And it is precisely for that reason that I would love to see your "Best of 2012" list, if you care to post one.

I'm with the school of NOT getting rid of my CDs. If only my brother could find the crates of albums of mine that he had at one point! Hey Metalboy, nice flashback on some of those bands you listed! I remember seeing Cleavage a bunch of times around the NJ/NY area. In fact, I was a camera operator on a show where they were one of the opening bands for EZO. Unfortunately that pilot never saw the light of day! I remember they had a pretty cool band logo, too! LOL! And I remember seeing Pharoah in a little club in NJ in about '86 or '87. As a matter of fact, I just saw them as one of the openers for Cinderella at the Starland Ballroom in NJ about a year ago. Do you remember Xenon? Now they were definitely one of the "how'd they not make it big?" bands in my opinion. Aaahhhh... memories!

I urge all to check out the "Real Stuff" the link will take you to. It will get you off the head of a pin we have all danced on for way too long. There's a whole other universe of great 80's/Early 90's Hair Metal you need to explore.

Also, though it will still be another week or so, the boyz on heavyharmonies.com will each post their "Best of 2012"s. They tend to lean a little more on the AOR side of Hair Metal but check out what they posted as their "Best Of"s for 2011.

Plenty of awesome music I otherwise would have missed. And in case you wonder where these guys are coming from, just look at the wallpaper background of the site's home page and you'll get the general idea, to say the least, hahaha!!!

Hey Metalboy. Solo is not bad. It reminds me a little of Tuff ( that is, pretty mellow, not really rock ). I liked one song on the Tuff CD ( I forget the CD name, but the song was Ruck a pit bridge or something ). I couldn't work out why that was good and the rest of the CD sucked so bad. I guess by '91, a lot of these bands were chasing pop a lot more than rock

Christian! Stay with me, dude! Cleavage IS 100% AMERICAN 80's Hard Rockin' Hair Metal, pure and simple. Check out this YouTube collection of some more of their stuff particularly, "15 Gets You 20" (something that would probably not even be penned today) AND their cover of "Highway To Hell" which aired on MTV:

Their "Demo" CD trades for anywhere between $500-600 a CD yet the price of the average Iron Maiden CD is $4 and there are two simple reasons for that -- RARITY and Quality, especially when you consider they produced their stuff themselves for little or no money.

To fully understand and appreciate "The Holy Grails of Hair Metal", you have to suspend all your preconceived notions of just exactly what qualifies as Hair Metal. However, given the fact your more of a Heavy METALLIST and not really a Glam Metallist (save for a few backhanded gratuitous nods to Bon Jovi and Poison) it may not be something you cannot allow yourself to do.

Or, like your denial of the greatness of Cheap Trick, it may just hinge on something being lost in translation or more obviously, a basic lack off understanding of precisely just what Rock and Roll is.

Or it just may be a matter of convenience to remain close minded, especially if you are a collector and can't face the price of entry:

BTW, Tuff is great! Again, PURE 110% L.A. Choice Hair Metal, which obviously isn't your bag.

So if you don't want to play ball and open your mind to new music from a bygone era, just climb back on your head of a pin and start slam dancin' with yourself again.
