Check Out The New Rival Sons Video

Rival Sons just released a video for "Until the Sun Comes." A great video from a great band!

I was a huge champion of these guys a couple years ago, and they certainly deserve their hard-earned success, but their music has jumped the shark to an extent. This song was written about 20 years ago. It's called "A Girl Like You" by the Smitherenes.

Good ear Bob- a blatant ripoff of the Smithereens riff...

Definitely a good call on The Smithereens. It couldn't be more obvious.

Wow, I love RS, but yeah that intro riff is pretty damn close to AGLY.

Oh, the torture having to dissect these tunes side by side. 1st listen to each song once all the way through and then flip back and forth a few times to try and detect the similarities between actual song structure, phrasing, etc.

Gotta hand it to your Metal Detection (well, not really Metal, because neither of these acts have nary a trace of Metal in them...

And the verdict is... I hear the similarity in the riffs but overall, the Rival Suns song is tres cooler than The Smithereens.

First, allow me some quick background here... I saw The Smithereens open for The Ramones at Hammerjack's in Baltimore in 1985 or something and I gotta say, The Smithereens were pretty good if you go for that sort of thing.

Of course, the biggest deal was their encore -- their masterpiece, one of the coolest "alternative" songs of the 80's -- "Blood And Roses". If you never saw the video, you would have thought these were the coolest cats in the alley.

But if you saw the video, you would think they were Franciscan Monks gone off the reservation. A cool sounding band with a totally nerd image hoping Rickenbachers might save them.

But in the end, The Ramones wiped the floor with The Smithereens the night I saw them and Rival Sons damn near do the same here, as well. Yeah, I hear the similarities, but in the final analysis, Rival Sons are cooler and so is their song.

Quite simply -- Super cool song. Super cool video. Great band and another one of Al's great discoveries!

Wow, Jeff. Tell us something new! Anything else you care to add? So what if it's similar? Is it good or is it bad? Or you all just trolls checkin' to make sure bandmember's names are spelled right and who stole what riff from who when it's so frickin' basic it was probably stolen from somebody else.

I hear the similarity but don't necessarily discount The Rival Sons' song because of it. Why? Cuz it's still tres cool and frickin' ROCKS, that's why!

Unlike UNROCK Smithereens who are, by nearly all accounts, including my own at Hammer's years ago, a frickin' borefest!

Looks like the Rival Sons are coming back to American Soil for a bit here. Hopefully they add more dates (anything in the midwest) to check them out.
