This Made Me Smile

The twins in the tweet below listen to 80s and 90s songs for the first time and record their reactions. This reaction to hearing Phil Collins "In The Air Tonight" is just classic. I love when new generations find songs and acts we already love. This is the good side of social media.

Wait till someone tells these guys that the song is about a murder and that Phil invites the murderer to his show. Front row seats and all! Then when In The Air Tonight starts he shines a spotlight on the guy (murderer), outing him and getting arrested. Whoa!!!

Not. Coolest ‘80’s urban legend. Followed closely by the guy in scuba gear found dead in the middle of the burned forest. A freakin’ fire helicopter scooped water up from the ocean to put out a fire in forest. Whoa. Not.

Simpler times indeed

Hahaha, Kixchix. That story always makes me laugh. Love how stories like that used to spread. Oh wait. Stories like that still _do_ spread. Good times!

Good music transcends. Simple as that. I saw this video earlier today and it made me smile. And smiles are always a good thing.

If you would like to experience a SUPERIOR more AOR-ish cleaned up version of “Something In The Air Tonight” by The Protomen that should, I dare say, make you smile even wider than the original.

That’s because their version eliminates the annoying, grating, overly nasal noise that is Phil Collins’ voice, replacing it with the beautiful vocal stylings of none other than lead singer, Raul Panther III!

So, check that and more out on “The Cover Up”, their stellar 2015 album released in 2015, featuring an astoundingly wide ranging, clever eclectic mix of covers.

Released in 2015, the album cover says its an “Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” album, yet there’s no movie except for the one listening to it creates in your mind.

Never heard of The Protomen before I read your post, but I’ve now become a fan. Thanks for the rec. That album is legit.

My pleasure ... Totally stumbled onto it, maybe an Apple Music recommendation (haters stop hatin’ or maybe hate less, haha!!) ...

Speaking of legit, your knowledge and appreciation of 70’s Classic Rock / Heavy Metal and 80’s / 90’s Hair Metal (forgive the term, haha!!) / Glam Metal / Heavy Metal / Hard Rock / AOR, as well as current music of a similar vein, seems quite extensive.

Please let me know of any great bands you have an extra appreciation for I may or may not be aware of and I will do the same as it could lead to some fascinating discussion!

p.s. Also, are you familiar with the website, heavyharmonies.com ? Either way, check it out now! Headin’ over there now, come to think of it as I haven’t been in awhile and I’m sure they’ve got some great new recommendations ... Also, the Ebay Rarities as well as their annual Best of’s, i.e. “Best of 2019” really showcases THE best high quality new bands and / or albums for every year since the website’s inception with lists compiled by their webmaster / fearless leader and his Metal breathren. I always send him a couple of bucks once in awhile so he can keep the site going ... Enjoy!

Thanks for the suggestion, MB, I’ll check it out. I’ll have more thoughts on this later.

Another great find, Metalboy! I, too, had never heard of The Protomen. Solid cover and some interesting additional songs by them on YouTube. Thanks for sending us all in the right direction again!

That said, I have no issue with Phil Collins' voice or the original version. Methinks the sonic universe is big enough to encompass Phil's and Raul's lovely voices.

I wouldn’t call Collins’ voice lovely, HIM!

However, it IS inimitable AND he is the creator, writer and singer of the original which is indelibly branded onto the inside of our brains due to overexposure on the airwaves, both FM and MTV!

For some REAL comedy about Collins, just read the Chapter of “American Psycho” by Brett Easton Ellis he devotes to the main character’s long diatribe critique of Collins’ music.

Absolutely KILLARIOUS!!! ... Just find that chapter (skip the rest of the book, however, as it’s just too morbid to read) and get ready to laugh your derrières off!
