Best of 2013?

It's hard to believe but it's already November and 2013 is winding down fast. Before you know it, the holidays will be here and we'll be looking toward 2014.

As part of my gig with Dayton City Paper, I've been tasked with doing a "best of Glam and Metal 2013" list for the end of year issue. Since such lists always take some thought, I figured I better get started now. This is where you come in: I'd like your suggestions. Provide me your opinions on the best of the past year and I'll consider adding to the list. If the band is super obscure, give me a couple tidbits of info. Remember - writing for a newspaper is a different audience than this blog, so I'm going to have to be either a little more general or super descriptive in my best of choices!

I'll spoil the suspense and tell you that Black Veil Brides is definitely making the cut. Now, give me your choices!

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Heaven's Basement with "Filthy Empire". I saw them open for Buckcherry early this year and was blown away. I bought the album immediately after the show and had them sign it for me. Great guys and an ever better band. For anybody who hasn't heard the album, please take a listen as it will definitely go into your top 10 on the year. If you do end up listening to it, as I strongly recommend it, please let me know what you think of it!

John! I don't have the whole album but I bought "Heartbreaking Son Of A Bitch" way back when the album came out. 110% BADA*S!!! I will investigate the rest of the album again on your recommendation, my friend.

It's clear to me that certain people hate things for being modern, and would love the same music if it was released by someone who had the 'right name' and the 'right history'. That's fine with me, I refuse to lower myself to fighting on the internet, especially about taste in music. Stone sour and A7X are hookless and riffless ? You must be deaf. How does something 'take itself too seriously' ? Do you mean that it is successful in today's market, and thus regarded seriously by others ? I don't care if that's true or not. It's 'all about the music', popular or otherwise.

And this is why I come here - Heaven's Basement ?? They completely rock ! Be picking that one up.

As for Christian/Metalboy ?

Christian, don't lower yourself, just be yourself. We all can't agree with Metalboy! He's obviously tone deaf if he doesn't dig Tesla :)

I have to say, Heaven's Basement is AWESOME. I can't believe I forgot them, either. So are Rival Sons. SUCH a good year for music....

GNR, I tend to agree, I'm done with it.

Allyson: purely, for shits and giggles, you gotta include steel panther's "all you can eat" CD (2014) on your "2013 best of" list. Those in the know, will ideally, get the joke.

Boo-Hoo. If you can't tell the difference between what ROCKS and what doesn't, you'll never know.

And the same goes with bands who take themselves too seriously...

Example: Mustaine, a complete and total nutter, but putting his bizarrely extremist right wing politics aside, knows how to have a good time with the genre in the music, in his lyrics and in his performance. Lars Ulrich, on the other hand is the most boring one dimensional jerk you could ever meet and I did. It comes through in his music as it does through his mouth when interviewed.

And I guess you're right, I can't really give an honest assessment of your darling Stonesourpuss and A2X4 because I frickin' fell asleep within the first minute of listening to 'em.

As for Heaven's Basement, now you're talking.

Aside from that, Christian, if you placed your entire CD collection in a time capsule and aliens dug it up and opened it, they'd simply yawn, reseal it and promptly bury it back into the ground where it was always meant to be.

Oh, and don't forget to let G'n'R throw his Tesla sh*t in there, too. I know you're into buying every version of the same old boring CD so now you can add his crap into the same steaming pile of your super special Tesla section.

OH, I am in agreement with everyone giving props to Sabbath - 13!!! STRONG ROCK RECORD! Worked for me!

There you are Glametal Princess Kari! Where has thou art been?! Taming Metal Dragons with that black crystal Flying V?

Your comments are dead on. That's why I got "13" at #1!

p.s. Winery Dogs is a borefest, though, sorry.

Is Sabbath Glam ? :)

And I can only dream of a Super Special Tesla Section ! That must only exist in heaven.

Must suck not liking a band that's been rocking since mid the 80s to now. And with *GASP* almost all the original members still. Sorry that Franky Hannon busted your balls once upon a time, but some of us have had nothing but great experiences with the band. And I may be wrong, but you can't be friends with everyone.

Can't wait to see them in January at a great venue in the Twin Cities. Unitl then (something that isn't a MTV video):

Gannon did not bust MY balls, G'n'R, ya yutz! He was acting superior to the wait staff in the sushi bar on the SS Poesia one night on Shiprocked! Funny, dick*ead Vince Neil was also in the restaurant that night and Gannon was such a horse's ass, he made Neil look like 007.

I'll jump back in.
Christian- when I am on a site that is called bringbackglam.com, my bands listed are going to be glam. I'm funny that way. You say that some of us are in the past with our musical preferences!? That's why I'm HERE! I do get in the mood for other things, but I try to keep my comments focused on the task at hand.

P.S. The "other things" are not Stone Sour or A7x. They suck. I have proof. I think Metalboy was being nice with "boring" & "hookless" & such.
