Best of 2013?

It's hard to believe but it's already November and 2013 is winding down fast. Before you know it, the holidays will be here and we'll be looking toward 2014.

As part of my gig with Dayton City Paper, I've been tasked with doing a "best of Glam and Metal 2013" list for the end of year issue. Since such lists always take some thought, I figured I better get started now. This is where you come in: I'd like your suggestions. Provide me your opinions on the best of the past year and I'll consider adding to the list. If the band is super obscure, give me a couple tidbits of info. Remember - writing for a newspaper is a different audience than this blog, so I'm going to have to be either a little more general or super descriptive in my best of choices!

I'll spoil the suspense and tell you that Black Veil Brides is definitely making the cut. Now, give me your choices!

Even though it's not out until Tuesday, Stryper's "No More Hell to Pay" Is one of the best I've heard this year. Black Veil Brides is really good as well. I don't really listen to as much new glam as I used to. But I'm still going with Stryper at the top.

As far as glam goes Black Veil Brides were one of my favorite albums this year. I don't know were to go on glam. But on another note Avenged Sevenfold's new album was killer. You could always put the Black Sabbath one in there that was pretty good as well.

This has been a slow year, in my opinion. If I'm wrong, you guys will let me know & give me some research to do. Reckless Love tops my list, but from what I've heard of the new Stryper, that should make it.

This has been an amazing year. A7X, Asking Alexandria, Alter Bridge ( their new one is KILLER ), Trivium, Rob Zombie, 5FDP, Black Sabbath. Then there's lesser lights with equally amazing albums, like Michael Monroe and Heaven and Earth ( who were great, but I only recall because of the notes above ). Deep Purple's new one was amazing, as was 'Black Star Riders', the band that poses as Thin Lizzy nowadays put out an amazing CD. I just got the new Coney Hatch and it's also killer.

I can't believe I didn't mention Stone Sour. Despite it all, despite the competition, they released the best CD of 2012.

Ha! Always gotta throw in a backhanded dig, Christian, once again betraying your own namesake and supposed beliefs...

And I quote: "Then there's LESSER lights with equally amazing albums, Michael Monroe..."

Frickin' Michael Monroe is BETTER than all you mention with the exception of Sabbath and Purple. When the HELL are you ever going to get off your high horse?

Why can't you self-edit a little and just recommend his new album without a degrading caveat? Monroe is the REAL Deal.

It's also laughable that Monroe's the only one you mention who's GLAM, once again begging the question, "Why do you even come on this site?"

My list, which contains mostly stuff you've never heard of because you wouldn't know ROCK if it hit you in the face, is forthcoming.

STAY TUNED, Folks!!!...

Barring any last minute changes as we still have 2 months left in 2013:

BEST OF 2013 (Part 1)

1) Black Sabbath -- 13
2) Black Veil Brides -- "Wretched and Divine"
3) Hardcore Superstar -- "C'mon Take On Me"
4) Reckless Love -- "Spirit"
5) Crashdiet -- "The Savage Playground"
6) Buckcherry -- "Confessions"
7) De La Cruz -- "Street Level"
8) Station -- "Wired" EP
9) Santa Cruz -- "Screaming For Adrenaline"
10) Wolfpakk -- "Cry Wolf"
11) Maverick -- "Talk's Cheap"
12) Shameless -- "Beautiful Disaster"

p.s. Thanks to Allyson and all the BBGer's who turned me onto a lot of these bands. More to come the end of December. Any questions about these bands, Google or YouTube is just a click away. If you ain't heard some of 'em, trust me, it'll be worth it!

I forgot about a lot. Buckcherry, Hardcore Superstar, Crashdiet, and Rob Zombie like you guys said. I totally forgot to mention Ghost or Ghost BC. I think Allyson might have shared them before on here. But just in case she didn't and you guys don't know, they are a fantastic band from Sweden. They are like a new Mercyful Fate. Totally metal I think you guys might appreciate them because they have a new album out called Infestissumam. My list might change a lil because we still have some time left.

I'm an old guy,so I gotta go with Metalboy's #1 pick also. Sabbath definitely still got it and 13 proves it.Rob Zombie's newest also hammers,as does Deep Purples. far as newer bands, although I think some of the satanic lyrics rate pretty high on the old "cheese factor", Ghost's music is definitely killer, along with Black Veil Brides. I'm also hoping for a new release from Accept in 2014, because their last 2 releases have been nothing short of phenomenal,IMHO. Wolf Hoffman is one of the most underrated guitarists/riff writers on the face of the planet. There are times ai think the frickin' guy is going to set a guitar neck on fire during a solo. Lol

I too do not think this years crop of releases was as good as last years... Still some pretty good stuff out there if you look for it.

1.) Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - "Unvarnished"
2.)Crashdiet - "The Savage Playground"
3.) Station - "Wired"
4.) De La Cruz - "Street Level"
5.) Wildside Riot - "No Second Take"
6.) Slam Bang - "Everyday Is A Party"
7.) Shannon - "Circus Of The Lost Souls"
8.) Rage Of Angels - "Dreamworld"
9.) Black Sabbath - "13"
10.) Nasty Bulletz - "Right Time To Rock you"

Also... The new Metal Church release is very good. Just got it this week and have only spun it 3 or 4 times. It would most likely make my list by the end of 2014.

The tate-less queensryche album, black star riders debut and jimi jamisons new record are the absolute barburners of 2013! Honorable mention to strypers song no more hell to pay

Metalboy, I meant lesser in terms of overall sales and exposure, in the modern music world. I did not mean it as a put down, just in terms of what is not obviously 'big', today. The new Michael Monroe was killer, I agree.

Rock-it, I am looking forward to the new Metal Church, I have that coming, I always loved those guys. And yes, the Tate-less QR album was also great. Two more reasons that this has not been anything like a 'slow year', in my book.
November 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChristian
Christian! You still don't get it. Sales and exposure have nothing to do with it. Allyson asked for "The Best of 2013".

She's talking about THE QUALITY OF THE MUSIC, not "popularity", though she still denigrates, unintentionally, when she uses the term "obscure".

And Michael Monroe is just as known as some of the crap you offer up.

What is on my list is REAL. Sabbath gets in on it's MUSICAL merits. The fact they practically invented the genre Heavy Metal has nothing to do with it.

When are you people going to get it through your fat heads!!!

It's about The Best MUSIC!
